Why San Siro won't host 2027 UEFA Champions League final
The Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) has ruled out the possibility of Milan's iconic San Siro stadium hosting the 2027 Champions League final. This decision was made after city authorities could not assure that the Stadio Giuseppe Meazza would be accessible during its scheduled renovation period. The refurbishment is set to take place between the 2026 Winter Olympics ceremonies and games at the 2032 European Championship.
UEFA reopens bidding for 2027 final venue
Following the decision, UEFA's executive committee has decided to take away the final from Milan and reopened the bidding process for a suitable venue. The organization intends to select a location for the 2027 final by June next year. This development comes after senior UEFA officials visited Milan last week and attended a Champions League match between Milan and Liverpool at San Siro.
San Siro's uncertain future and previous finals
The future of San Siro, which last hosted the Champions League final in 2016, has been shrouded in uncertainty due to potential demolition plans. AC Milan and Inter Milan presently share the stadium, both of which have proposed building their own stadiums. San Siro has a seating capacity of approximately 75,000 and has previously hosted the prestigious European football event four times.
