#IndiaInEngland: Ishant fined 15% match fee, one demerit point
Indian senior fast bowler, Ishant Sharma, was found guilty of breaching Level 1 of the ICC Code of Conduct during the recently concluded first Test match at Edgbaston. Ishant has been fined 15% of his match fee as well as awarded one demerit point. The incident occurred during Day 3 of the first Test. Here is more on the same.
Ishant violated Article 2.1.7 of the code
The lanky fast bowler violated Article 2.1.7 of the code, which is in relation to "using language, actions or gestures which disparage or which could provoke an aggressive reaction from a batsman upon his/her dismissal during an international match". The incident happened in the first session of play on Friday when the senior pacer celebrated the dismissal of England's middle-order batsman Dawid Malan.
Ishant accepts charge imposed on him
Ishant tried to provoke Malan when he celebrated in close proximity to the southpaw. The officials viewed the same as an instance of trying to prompt an aggressive reaction from the batsman. Ishant went on to accept the charge imposed on him by Jeff Crowe of the Emirates Elite Panel of ICC Match Referees. The charge was earlier levelled by on-field umpires.
Level 1 breach Code and the punishment
Level 1 breaches, during a match, carry a minimum penalty of an official reprimand, a penalty of 50 per cent on a maximum basis of a player's match fee, besides one or two demerit points.
When Ishant squared up Malan
Ishant came to life during the first session on Day 3 when he squared up Dawid Malan and got him to edge a delivery after pitching the ball in the middle stump region. The excitement of the wicket got him to provoke the batsman while he was walking back. Ishant picked 5/51 in the first Test that included three wickets in one over.
