Football: David de Gea wins his first Golden Glove award
David de Gea had already established himself as one of the best goalkeepers in the world, but now it is official. The Manchester United custodian has picked up his first Golden Glove award this season. David had joined Manchester United in 2011 and despite having one of the safest pairs of hands, he couldn't clinch the top prize in last 7 years.
David de Gea has 18 clean sheets this season
Another trophy added to his individual list of honors
David de Gea has 18 clean sheets this season, two more than second-placed Ederson of Manchester City. He was named Manchester United Players' Player of the Year this season and has also won the Sir Matt Busby Player of the Year, a record-breaking four times. The Premier League Golden Glove award is another feather in his cap.
He joins Premier League's list of elite
David is the second Spaniard to win the Premier League Golden Glove after Pepe Reina, who had won it for three consecutive seasons with Liverpool. The Golden Glove is given each year to the goalkeeper who keeps the most clean sheets in the campaign. The award was started in 2004-05 and has seen six different winners so far.
He is growing in stature
The 27-year-old began his career at Atletico Madrid in Spain. After spending 8 seasons with Atletico, David was signed by Sir Alex Ferguson's Manchester United. He was brought in to replace Edwin van der Sar. Edwin had also won this award with Manchester United. This is the third time that Jose Mourinho's goalkeeper has won the award.
