KXIP skipper Ashwin to join DC in IPL: Details here
Indian cricketer R Ashwin is set to join Delhi Capitals from Kings XI Punjab during the Indian Premier League trade window. According to a report in ESPNcricinfo. DC are keen to buy out Ashwin from KXIP in an all-cash deal. This will mark an end to a two-year association of Ashwin with KXIP. Here are the details.
DC keen to bolster the side by getting Ashwin
DC were interested in the prospect of getting Ashwin to bolster the side. They are a young team and Ashwin will help with his experience. DC have many spin options and Ashwin will be another strong addition. The former Chennai Super Kings player had joined KXIP for a sum of Rs 7.6 crore in 2018. He led KXIP for two seasons.
Besides DC, SRH were also interested in Ashwin
The report also added that Sunrisers Hyderabad were interested in buying the player. However, a deal could not be agreed upon. DC will be the fourth franchise for Ashwin in IPL. Besides CSK and KXIP, he also played for Rising Pune Supergiant for two seasons.
A look at Ashwin's IPL career and stint at KXIP
Ashwin has picked up 125 scalps in 139 IPL matches so far. He averages 26.48 and has an economy-rate of 6.79. In his two-season spell at KXIP, the premier spinner accounted for 25 wickets. Under his captaincy, Kings XI won 12 games and lost 16 in the previous two seasons. On both occasions, they lost the plot after showing a lot of promise.
KXIP to appoint new coaching staff and captain
KXIP decided to overhaul their coaching staff and are believed to be heading into a new direction. They will be looking to appoint new coaches that includes a head coach. Reports had stated that KXIP are also keen to appoint a new skipper. They have identified KL Rahul as the preferred candidate. He has been their most consistent player over the last two seasons.
DC overload spin options, KXIP in search of answers
DC already have a pool of spinners. They had earlier roped in Mayank Markande from Mumbai Indians. They also have the likes of Axar Patel, Sandeep Lamichhane, Amit Mishra and Rahul Tewatia. Getting Ashwin makes it look overcrowded. KXIP will need to get a new quality spinner. However, making Rahul the skipper could test his mettle. Overall, the deal somehow doesn't look right.
