IPL spot-fixing scandal: Two ED officers arrested by CBI
The Central Bureau of Investigation has arrested four people including 2 Enforcement Directorate officials in connection with the Indian Premier League spot-fixing scandal. Former Enforcement Directorate Joint Director J P Singh, along with three others were arrested of charges on bribery. CBI suspects that Singh took Rs. 7 crore to Rs. 10 crore as bribe money while investigating the IPL spot-fixing.
IPL hit with spot fixing scandal
In 2013, Delhi police had arrested players and bookies in relation to spot-fixing and betting scandal that had hit the Indian Premier League. Since then, the police have been investigating the Rs. 2,000-crore IPL betting scandal and have made various arrests in the case. Two IPL teams, Rajasthan Royal and Chennai Super Kings were suspended after their owners were found guilty of betting.
Underworld don Dawood Ibrahim linked with IPL betting scandal
A Supreme Court appointed panel investigating in the IPL betting scandal said that underworld don Dawood Ibrahim was the prime mover in the syndicate. However, Delhi Police did not find any link between Dawood and the betting scandal.
Others arrested include Singh's then deputy at ED
CBI also arrested J P Singh's then deputy at the ED, Sanjay Kumar, Mumbai based businessman Bimal Agrawal and Gujarat-based bookie Chandresh Patel. Singh was leading a probe for IPL spot-fixing scandal and Rs. 5,000 crore money laundering case against alleged hawala operator Afroz Fatta.
Singh was suspended in September 2015
JP Singh was earlier suspended from the Enforcement Directorate in September 2015 over corruption charges during his probe. An internal investigation in the ED revealed that Singh and Kumar contacted several bookies and asked for bribes in crores in return of their names being dropped from the investigation. Reportedly, Agrawal and Patel collected the cash from bookies and gave it to Singh and Kumar.
