IPL 2020: Are Kings XI Punjab thinking of releasing Ashwin?
It has been barely three months since the conclusion of IPL 2019, and preparations are already underway for the next season. Meanwhile, there are reports that Kings XI Punjab (KXIP) could make a huge change in their squad by releasing skipper Ravichandran Ashwin. Chances are he would be traded with another IPL team within a week. Here's more on this.
KXIP could trade Ashwin with Delhi or Rajasthan
As far as the trading goes, KXIP's board officials would meet with a couple of other franchise officials. As per a report by Mumbai Mirror, Ashwin is likely to be traded or sold directly to Delhi Capitals (DC), as they have expressed interest in the veteran. Also, Rajasthan Royals (RR) are reportedly interested in a trade swap for him for Krishnappa Gowtham.
Ashwin's fate as captain also uncertain
Meanwhile, it is yet unsure if Ashwin would retain his captaincy for the team he is traded to. As of now, Delhi have performed decently under their current skipper Shreyas Iyer and are unlikely to take him off the role. Meanwhile, Rajasthan too have a reliable captain in the form of Steve Smith, and chances are Ashwin could see himself play under him.
Ashwin failed to lead KXIP to playoffs
Ashwin, who was roped in for Rs.7.6 crores prior to IPL 2018, has been their skipper since 2018. As far as his performance at KXIP goes, he has played 28 matches, claiming 25 wickets at an average of 32.40, while he also managed to score 144 runs. However, he notably failed to lead the side to the playoffs so far.
KL Rahul could lead KXIP as hunt for coach continues
Meanwhile, it is understood that following the trade of Ashwin, the captaincy of KXIP would be handed to KL Rahul, who had been their star performer with the bat. Meanwhile, they are also in the hunt for a new coach, having released Mike Hesson, while they are in talks with Australian coaches like George Bailey and Darren Lehmann.
Where should Ashwin go post KXIP?
Talking about Ashwin, among the current teams which are being rumored to have his services, the author believes Delhi suits him the most. The prime reason behind this is the Kotla track, which is well-known to be sluggish, and Ashwin, being a spinner, can make a huge impact on such a track. Moreover, Delhi also need a world-class spinner like him.
