IPL 2025: Raina, Rayudu call for more player retentions
As the Indian Premier League (IPL) franchises await the announcement of retention rules for the upcoming 2025 mega-auction, two cricket stalwarts have voiced their opinions. Suresh Raina and Ambati Rayudu, both renowned figures in the IPL circuit, have advocated an increase in player retentions. During the last mega-auction in 2022, teams were permitted to retain up to four players.
Rayudu emphasizes on team culture and stability
Rayudu emphasized the importance of maintaining a team's core to preserve its unique culture. He argued that franchises invest significantly in players, making it crucial to retain them for longer periods. "I feel retentions have to be a lot more because a franchise invests a lot in players," Rayudu said. He believes this approach not only upholds each team's distinctiveness but also contributes to their continued success.
Raina supports Rayudu's stance on player retentions
Raina, a former teammate of Rayudu, expressed his agreement with the latter's views on player retentions. He stated, "I 100% agree with Rayudu. The mega auction should be every three years." Raina also asserted that the IPL Governing Council will likely make decisions that will benefit the game.
Reclassification of retired international players
It was earlier reported that the BCCI is contemplating a contentious move to categorize retired international players as uncapped. With this, MS Dhoni, who retired from international cricket in 2020, could extend his IPL career. The CSK officials have stated that if Dhoni decides to play next season, he would be one of their retentions, even if the BCCI permits only two.
Raina's views on future of T20 cricket
In addition to the retention discussion, Raina also shared his views on the future of T20 cricket. He talked about Indian wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant's return to Test cricket after nearly two years. The latter is set to feature in the 1st Test against Bangladesh, starting September 19. "He is looking very good. He scored a 50 in Duleep Trophy," said Raina ahead of the Chepauk Test.
