Decoding the 100-plus team totals in powerplay (IPL)
Sunrisers Hyderabad raced past Lucknow Super Giants in Match 57 of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 season on Wednesday. The 166-run target turned out to be a cakewalk for SRH openers Travis Head and Abhishek Sharma, who were nothing but destructive on the night. Their brilliance meant SRH were 107/0 after six overs. Here we decode the highest team totals in powerplay (IPL).
CSK - 100/2 versus PBKS, 2014
Suresh Raina's breathtaking 87(25) against Kings XI Punjab (now Punjab Kings) in the IPL 2014 Qualifier 2 is rated one of the best IPL knocks. His brilliance meant Chennai Super Kings were 100/2 after the first six overs. Although CSK lost by 24 runs while chasing 227, Raina's 87 is still the highest individual score in the first six overs in the IPL.
KKR - 105/2 versus RCB, 2017
Kolkata Knight Riders openers Chris Lynn and Sunil Narine were all over the Royal Challengers Bengaluru bowlers in the 2017 game in Bengaluru. The duo toiled with the opposition bowlers as KKR were 105/0. While Narine (54 off 17) completed his fifty inside the powerplay, Lynn too scored a fifty in the match (50 off 22). KKR eventually accomplished the 159-run target.
SRH - 107/0 versus LSG, 2024
Chasing 166 versus LSG in the recent game, Abhishek (75* off 28) and Head (89* off 30) came out all guns blazing and won the match inside 10 overs (9.4). Their brilliance within the field restriction meant SRH were 107/2 after the first six overs. Head got to his fifty off just 16 balls. Meanwhile, Abhishek's half-century came in the seventh over.
SRH - 125/0 versus DC, 2024
SRH also occupy the top spot on this list for their heroics against Delhi Capitals earlier in the season. Head and Abhishek came out all guns blazing. They brought up SRH's fifty in 2.4 overs. SRH's 125/0 in the first six overs is also the highest powerplay score in T20 cricket. Head's 89 (32) and Abhishek's 46 (12) helped SRH post a match-winning 266/7.
