BCCI limits practice sessions for IPL teams in new regulations
What's the story
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has imposed new rules for practice sessions of Indian Premier League (IPL) teams.
The new guidelines limit teams to seven practice sessions and two warm-up matches or center-wicket practice sessions.
The rules were conveyed to franchises recently, and this is a departure from the previous seasons where such restrictions were not imposed.
Directive
BCCI aims to keep grounds and pitches in top condition
The BCCI's latest directive also comes with instructions to IPL centers, which prohibit the use of grounds for local matches, legends leagues, or celebrity tournaments. This is to keep the grounds and pitches in ideal condition for the cash-rich league.
According to a Cricbuzz report dated February 8, these new guidelines are part of BCCI's efforts to ensure optimal playing conditions for all teams participating in the IPL.
Guidelines
BCCI outlines practice session rules in official note
The BCCI has detailed the rules for practice sessions in an official note.
Teams are allowed up to seven practice sessions of three hours each under floodlights, two of which are practice matches or open nets.
The note also mentions if a team plays a practice game under lights, it shouldn't exceed three-and-a-half hours. Prior written approval from the BCCI is required for these matches.
Restrictions
Practice sessions before first home match
The BCCI has also restricted practice sessions in the days leading to a franchise's first home game of the IPL season.
No practice matches or sessions can be held on the main square during this period. However, each team will get one side wicket for range hitting.
The changes are aimed at preparing the wickets for the season and ensuring optimal playing conditions.
Conflict resolution
BCCI proposes resolution for simultaneous practice sessions
In case both sides want to practice at the same time, the BCCI has proposed a way to settle the clash.
The board will act as a mediator between the two teams' managers who can either find an alternative session or share their time.
If they fail to reach a consensus, the BCCI will determine practice times keeping both teams' requests in mind, creating two two-hour slots giving both teams equal playing conditions and exclusive use of the ground.

BCCI announces range hitting practice rules
The BCCI has also clarified that teams can practice range hitting during their scheduled sessions.
One pitch for each team will be prepared on both sides of the main square.
Teams can use this wicket for various activities like range hitting, bowling run-throughs, throw downs, or any other intended purpose.
However, requests for open or partially-open nets won't be entertained. Only players, team support staff, and net bowlers will be allowed on the main field during this time.
