IPL 2019: Rating the captaincy of the eight teams
The Indian Premier League (IPL) 2019 is becoming interesting with each passing game. Certain teams, like Chennai Super Kings, have already gained impetus with them putting up an all-round show. While some have not been able to deliver consistent performance. One of the major differences between top performers and others has been the captaincy. In the same light, we rate the eight IPL captains.
Brilliant MSD gets a 9/10 rating
MS Dhoni has always been smart and effective as a leader for Chennai Super Kings. The defending champions have looked solid to date and Dhoni has guided the side well despite losing certain key players. MSD has used the spinners to perfection and got the calls right against teams. He has also contributed as a finisher to help his side clinch several close games.
Ashwin gets 8/10 for using his resources effectively
R Ashwin has improved as a captain and Kings XI Punjab are doing reasonably well. With four wins and three losses, KXIP stay fourth on the table. They could have won a few more, but some poor individual show stalled the side. Further, except the match against MI, he has been aggressive and used his resources well. They can go the distance this term.
Karthik and Rohit get 7.5/10 each
Kolkata Knight Riders and Mumbai Indians have pocketed four games out of six till now. Both the captains have been dependent on some strong performers to lift them up. However, the overall balance is still missing. Dinesh Karthik hasn't been able to do his job as a finisher, while Rohit Sharma has struggled immensely with the bat. But they have managed to produce results.
Much improved Iyer gets 6.5/10
Shreyas Iyer has performed well with the bat, but importantly, he is maturing well as a skipper. The issue for Delhi Capitals is that some of the players haven't quite delivered the goods. Shikhar Dhawan, in particular, has been a let down. Delhi are sixth at the moment and they will need to put in a couple of strong performances, as Iyer gets 6.5/10.
Bhuvi hasn't quite hit the ground running, gets 6/10
Bhuvneshwar Kumar hasn't quite got going as a captain and several issues have hit Sunrisers Hyderabad. They are over-dependent on David Warner for the runs and the middle order has failed to take charge. Further, the bowling has been pretty much one dimensional. Bhuvi hasn't rotated the pace attack despite enjoying the luxury of a solid line-up. He himself has struggled at the death.
Kohli and Rahane get 2.5/10 after a disastrous start
Royal Challengers Bangalore have struggled big time and Virat Kohli has, once again, failed to rally his troops. Like every other season, RCB are dependent on star players and Kohli's captaincy hasn't improved as well. Ajinkya Rahane's decision-making on the field has also been questionable. He hasn't been sharp during pivotal moments. Steve Smith could be handed the role from next season onwards.
