IPL 2025: Franchises to finalize retentions by October 31
The Indian Premier League (IPL) has given franchises until October 31 to lock in their player retentions before the mega auction for the 2025 season. Under the new rules set by the governing council, teams can keep up to six players using a mix of retentions and Right-to-Match (RTM) options. The retained players can consist of a maximum of five capped (Indian and overseas) and no more than two uncapped (Indian) players.
New rules for player retention and auction purse
To keep some players on board, anyone who gets their first international cap before the October 31 deadline will be considered as capped. But if an uncapped player is retained and then plays an international match before the auction, they will still be labeled as uncapped. In such cases, only ₹4 crore will be deducted from the team's auction purse. The IPL has bumped up each franchise's budget for the mega auction by ₹20 crore to ₹120 crore.
IPL reinstates rule for retired Indian players
The IPL has brought back a rule it scrapped in 2021, allowing Indian players who've been out of international cricket for at least five years to enter the auction as uncapped players. This change gives teams like Chennai Super Kings a chance to keep their former captain MS Dhoni, who last played an international match at the 2019 ODI World Cup, as an uncapped player.
