IPL 2025 auction likely to be held overseas in November
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has hinted at the possibility of conducting the Indian Premier League (IPL) Season 18 auction overseas. The event is anticipated to occur in November, specifically during the third or fourth weekend. This information was shared with IPL franchises by BCCI, as reported by Cricbuzz. Here are the details.
Middle East emerges as potential venue for IPL auction
The Middle East is being considered as a potential location for the upcoming IPL auction, following last year's successful event in Dubai. Other Gulf cities such as Doha and Abu Dhabi are also under consideration. Interestingly, Saudi Arabia has expressed interest in hosting the auction, amid its recent heavy investments into sports including cricket. However, no final decision on the venue has been made yet.
IPL franchises await retention rules ahead of mega auction
The IPL franchises are awaiting the announcement of retention rules before the mega auction. BCCI has informed them about a potential delay in this announcement, causing concern among some franchise officials regarding their preparation time for the auction. These rules are expected to be announced by month-end, giving teams approximately two months to strategize for the auction. The deadline for teams to announce their retentions is likely around November 15.
BCCI's long-standing desire to host IPL auction overseas
The BCCI and IPL authorities have always harbored a desire to host the auction overseas. This aspiration was only realized last year in December 2023. In previous seasons, there were plans to hold the auction in London, and Istanbul was also considered as a potential venue. The upcoming season is set to continue this trend with another overseas event.
Former Indian team coaches eye IPL franchise positions
Coaches who previously worked with Rahul Dravid in the Indian team are expected to join various IPL franchises. Vikram Rathour, India's former batting coach, is tipped to join Dravid at Rajasthan Royals. Paras Mhambrey, India's former bowling coach under Dravid, is also likely to join a franchise. These coaches have reportedly turned down commentary offers in favor of coaching roles.
