    PBKS stun KKR, register highest successful chase in T20s: Stats

    What's the story

    Punjab Kings stunned Kolkata Knight Riders at Eden Gardens in Match 42 of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 season on Friday.

    KKR posted a massive score of 261/6 in 20 overs. Phil Salt and Sunil Narine hit fifties.

    In response, Punjab floored the Knights, riding on some brilliant hitting from the likes of Prabhsimran Singh, Jonny Bairstow and Shashank Singh.

    KKR

    KKR smash their second-highest team total in IPL history

    KKR smashed their second-highest team total in the IPL history. The Knights had earlier hit 272/7 in the IPL this season and have now surpassed the 250-run mark for the second time.

    KKR recorded the highest team total against Punjab. They broke a score of 257/5 registered by Lucknow Super Giants against PBKS in 2023.

    KKR also hold the 3rd-highest score against Punjab (245/6).

    PBKS

    PBKS shatter records

    As per ESPNcricinfo, Punjab have now recorded the highest successful chase ever in T20s. They broke the record of South Africa, who scored 259/4 versus West Indies (258/5).

    Middlesex (254/3) chased down a 253-run target against Surrey at the Vitality Blast in in June 2023.

    In the IPL, the previous highest run-chase before this was Rajasthan Royals scoring 226/6 after PBKS managed 223/2.

    Massive records attained in this match

    The KKR versus PBKS match has now witnessed the most sixes in a Men's T20 match (42 sixes).

    Notably, SRH vs MI and RCB vs SRH had 38 sixes each earlier this season.

    PBKS batters smashed 24 sixes, scripting the record for most sixes by a side in IPL.

    SRH smashed 22 sixes each against RCB and DC earlier this season.

    Bairstow

    PBKS batter Jonny Bairstow slams his second IPL century

    PBKS opener Bairstow floored KKR with a 45-ball ton. He finished with a score of 108* from 48 balls, hitting eight fours and nine sixes (SR: 225).

    Playing his 46th IPL match, Bairstow has 1,495 runs at an average of 35.60. He owns two centuries and nine fifties. He also went past 150 IPL fours during this knock (153).

    Duo

    Prabhsimran and Shashank floor KKR

    Prabhsimran hit a 20-ball 54. He smashed four fours and five sixes (SR: 270). In 29 matches, he owns 630 runs at 21.72. Prabhsimran hit his second IPL half-century (100s: 1).

    This season, he owns 208 runs at 28.11.

    Shashank hit a 28-ball 68*. He registered two fours and eight sixes (SR: 242.86).

    In IPL 2024, he owns 263 runs at 65.75 (50s: 2).

    Narine

    Sunil Narine hammers his 6th IPL half-century

    Sunil Narine hammered a whirlwind 71-run knock for KKR. Narine smoked nine fours and four sixes (SR: 221.88), having faced 32 balls.

    Playing his 170th IPL match, Narine surpassed 1,400 runs (1,403) at 16.70 (SR: 165.25). He smashed his sixth fifty (100s: 1). Narine has surpassed 150 fours (151).

    In IPL 2024, Narine owns 357 runs from eight matches at 44.62 (SR: 184.02).

    Salt

    Salt makes PBKS pay with 75-run knock

    Fellow KKR opener Phil Salt hammered a whirlwind 75-run knock. Salt smoked six fours and six sixes (SR: 202.70), having faced 37 balls.

    Salt raced to 324 runs in IPL 2024 at 46.28 from eight matches (SR: 176.08). He has clobbered his third fifty, slamming 27 fours and 17 sixes.

    Overall, Salt has slammed 542 IPL runs at 36.13 (SR: 170.97; 50s: 5).

    This is the first instance in the IPL history where openers from both teams registered fifty-plus scores. Narine (71) reached his fifty in 23 balls as Salt too breached the mark. For PBKS, Prabhsimran hit a solid fifty and Bairstow went past 100.

    Bowling

    Narine the only bright spot for KKR

    Narine claimed 1/24 from his four overs (ER: 6). The rest of the KKR bowlers conceded 236 runs from 14.4 overs (ER: 16.09) and didn't pick a single wicket.

    Narine now owns 173 IPL wickets at 25.58 (ER: 6.74). Across eight matches this season, he owns 10 scalps 22.30 (ER: 6.96).

    Versus PBKS, he owns 20 scalps at 20.02.

    Harshal

    Harshal is the Purple Cap holder this season

    Punjab pacer Harshal Patel conceded 48 runs from three overs, claiming one wicket. Harshal is now the Purple Cap holder this season (14 wickets at 23.28).

    He owns 125 IPL wickets from 101 matches at 23.98.

    Arshdeep Singh managed 2/45 from four overs. In 60 matches, he owns 69 scalps at 26.79.

    Feats

    Unique IPL feats for the two teams

    KKR scored 137/0 after 10 overs. This is now their highest score after first 10 overs.

    PBKS smacked 132/1 after 10 overs. This is now PBKS's highest IPL score at the 10-over mark in the IPL, bettering 131/3 against SRH in Hyderabad in 2014.

    PBKS managed 93/1 in the powerplay. This is their best PP score, surpassing 86/1 vs SRH in 2014.

    KKR remain second with 10 points from eight matches (W5 L3). Their NRR is +0.972. PBKS are eighth at the moment. They claimed their third win from six matches (L6). Punjab's NRR is -0.187.

    KKR were given an ideal start from their openers. Both Salt and Narine were class. Thereafter, Venkatesh Iyer, Andre Russell and Shreyas Iyer shined for the hosts.

    PBKS actually did well not to let the score get past 270-280. They conceded 124 runs in the final 10.

    The Kings then came out all guns blazing. Every bowler barring Narine leaked runs.

    A total of 523 runs were scored in this match. This is the joint second highest match aggregate in T20s, behind the 549 runs scored by RCB and SRH in Bengaluru last week.

    PBKS have scaled seven targets of 200-plus. This is two more than any other team in T20 cricket.
