Harshal Patel becomes second Indian to win Purple Cap twice
Kolkata Knight Riders became the champions of IPL 2024 after beating Sunrisers Hyderabad in Chennai. The Knight Riders claimed their third IPL title after chasing down 114. While KKR's Sunil Narine was adjudged the MVP, Punjab Kings pacer Harshal Patel finished with the Purple Cap. He became only the second Indian to take most wickets in multiple IPL seasons. Here are the key stats.
Joint-most wickets for PBKS in a season
Harshal snapped up 24 wickets across 14 IPL games at a remarkable average of 19.87. His economy of 9.73 is a bit on a higher side. Varun Chakravarthy (21) and Jasprit Bumrah (20) are the only other bowlers to touch the 20-wicket mark. Notably, Harshal took the joint-most wickets for PBKS in an IPL season with Andrew Tye (24 in 2018).
Third bowler with this feat
As mentioned, Harshal has become only the second Indian to bag the Purple Cap in multiple seasons. He joined Bhuvneshwar Kumar, who topped the wicket column in 2016 and 2017 for SRH. Former Chennai Super Kings all-rounder Dwayne Bravo remains the only other bowler with this feat (2013 and 2015). Notably, Harshal is the first bowler to claim Purple Caps for two different teams.
Joint-most wickets in a season
Harshal snapped up 32 wickets in IPL 2021 where he represented Royal Challengers Bengaluru. He equaled Bravo's record for taking the most wickets in an IPL season. The Caribbean seamer also took 32 wickets in IPL 2013.
16 wickets in death overs
As per ESPNcricinfo, a total of 16 of Harshal's wickets in IPL 2024 came in the final five overs. His economy in this phase was 10.38. No other bowler claimed even 12 wickets in this phase in the league stage. Bumrah trails the PBKS star in this regard with 11 scalps. Besides, Harshal went wicketless just twice in the season.
