IPL 2024, PBKS down CSK at Chepauk: Key stats
Punjab Kings managed to breach Chennai Super Kings's Chepauk fortress in Match 49 of the 2024 Indian Premier League (IPL) season. The Kings successfully chased down 163 after restricting CSK on a spin-friendly wicket. Jonny Bairstow and Rilee Rossouw contributed with 40+ scores, while Harpreet Brar and Rahul Chahar took two wickets apiece. Earlier, Ruturaj Gaikwad (62) was the lone warrior for CSK.
CSK succumb to spin, reach 162/7
CSK openers Ajinkya Rahane and Gaikwad added 64 runs after PBKS elected to field. Brar dismissed Rahane (29) and Shivam Dube (0) on successive balls thereafter. Chahar tied up the other end, dismissing Ravindra Jadeja (70/3). Gaikwad and Sameer Rizvi kept CSK afloat before the former started finding boundaries. Brief cameos from Moeen Ali and MS Dhoni took CSK to 162/7.
PBKS get home despite faltering
CSK, who started with pace, removed Prabhsimran Singh (19/1) early on. Bairstow and Rossouw ruled the roost thereafter, taking the Kings past 80. Dube dismissed Bairstow against the run of play before Shahank Singh took over. The dismissal of Rossouw didn't affect PBKS much, with Shahank (25*) and Sam Curran (26*) getting PBKS home (17.5 overs). Notably, Mustafizur Rahman bowled a maiden over (15th).
A valuable knock from Gaikwad
As mentioned, Gaikwad added a 64-run opening stand with Rahane (8.1 overs) after PBKS put them in to bat. Dube and Jadeja also departed in quick succession, which titled momentum in PBKS's favor. The PBKS spinners then choked CSK in the middle overs before Gaikwad broke the shackles. He took CSK past 140, smashing a 48-ball 62 (5 fours and 2 sixes).
Five fifty-plus scores in last six innings
Gaikwad now has five 50+ scores in his last six IPL innings. His last six scores in ongoing edition reads 64, 98, 108*, 17, 69, and 67*. Earlier this season, he became the first player with an IPL ton as CSK skipper. He slammed an unbeaten 108(60) with the help of 12 fours and 3 sixes against Lucknow Super Giants.
The new Orange-Cap holder
Gaikwad has overtaken Virat Kohli to become the leading run-scorer of IPL 2024. The former owns 509 runs from 10 games at an incredible average of 63.62 this season. The tally includes a strike rate of 146.68.
Second IPL duck for Dube
Dube, who has been among the runs in IPL 2024, recorded a golden duck against PBKS. Brar trapped him in front right after dismissing Rahane. As per Cricket Statistician Bharath Seervi, Dube registered only his second duck in the IPL. His first came against Gujarat Titans in 2022. Dube, who also bowls medium-pace, later dismissed Bairstow to redeem himself.
No boundaries in middle overs!
CSK tallied 55 runs without losing a wicket in the Powerplay (8 fours). The middle overs saw CSK score at just 5.22 per over (47/3). Notably, CSK found no boundaries in this phase (Overs 7-15), the only such instance for CSK since 2011.
Second-oldest IPL debutant since 2014
English seamer Richard Gleeson made his IPL debut tonight (for CSK). At 36 years and 151 days, the right-arm pacer became the second-oldest IPL debutant since 2014. He is only behind Sikandar Raza (36y 342d), as per Cricbuzz. Notably, Gleeson gave CSK their first breakthrough in the form of Prabhsimran. He conceded 30 runs in 3.5 overs.
Brar, Chahar choke CSK
As mentioned, PBKS spinners Brar (2/17) and Chahar (2/16) were on fire in the middle overs. Moreover, skipper Curran saved an over of Chahar for Dhoni, who comes to bat in the final two overs. Chahar bowled the 19th over and cramped up Dhoni, who struggles against spin. The wrist-spinner conceded just three runs and dismissed Moeen Ali in that over.
Dhoni finally gets dismissed
Dhoni, who struggled while facing Chahar, smacked Arshdeep Singh for a four and six in the final over. He was run-out in an attempt to complete a double. Dhoni, playing his eighth innings in IPL 2024, was finally dismissed.
Bairstow, Rossouw shine for PBKS
Bairstow, who slammed a historic century against Kolkata Knight Riders at Eden Gardens, smashed a 30-ball 46 (7 fours and 1 six) against CSK. With this, Bairstow raced past 1,500 runs in the IPL. Meanwhile, Russouw contributed with a 23-ball 43. Shardul Thakur knocked him over toward the end. The South African batter now has 341 runs in the cash-rich league.
CSK still in top four; PBKS surpass GT
Despite the defeat, CSK continue to occupy the fourth spot in the IPL 2024 standings. They have 10 points and a Net Run Rate of +0.627. Meanwhile, PBKS have gone past Gujarat Titans to own the seventh spot. They have eight points (NRR: -0.062).
