IPL 2021: Decoding the unique records that can be scripted
The 14th edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) is all set to start from April 9 onwards. Mumbai Indians won the IPL 2020 edition held in the UAE after a delay due to the coronavirus pandemic. The action shifts back to India with six cities hosting the tournament. Ahead of a cracking season, we present the unique records that can be scripted.
Kohli could become first batsman to hit 6,000 IPL runs
Royal Challengers Bangalore skipper Virat Kohli has been the highest run-scorer in the IPL. The 32-year-old batsman has racked up 5,878 runs at an average of 38.16. Kohli needs 122 runs to amass the mark of 6,000 and will become the first player to achieve this mark. Kohli has five tons and 39 fifties under his belt with a best of 113.
The case of fours and sixes
Chennai Super Kings stalwart Suresh Raina has hit 493 fours and 194 sixes. He can achieve a dual mark of 500 fours and 200 sixes. Punjab Kings' Chris Gayle can become the first batsman in IPL history to get past 350 sixes (349). Shikhar Dhawan can become the first batsman to notch 600 fours (591). AB de Villiers can get to 400 fours (390).
Dwayne Bravo can achieve this unique record
IPL veteran Dwayne Bravo is set to become the only player in the history of the competition to register the double of 1,500 runs and 150 wickets. He is only 10 runs away from the historic milestone. Notably, he owns 153 wickets at 24.81. Meanwhile, he is also set to play his 150th IPL game.
Warner set to smash this special record
Sunrisers Hyderabad captain David Warner is the third-highest run-scorer in IPL. The Australian batsman owns 5,254 runs at 42.71. Notably, Warner has accumulated the most fifties in the competition (48). He is in line to become the first player to register 50 IPL half-centuries.
Dhoni in line to achieve a unique record as skipper
MS Dhoni has led 188 times in the tournament. The three-time IPL winner is in line to become the first captain to lead in 200 matches. Meanwhile, Rohit Sharma, who has won 68 matches as captain, needs four wins to surpass the tally of Gautam Gambhir (71) and become the second-most successful skipper in the competition's history.
