SRH hand captaincy to David Warner ahead of IPL 2020
Sunrisers Hyderabad have handed captaincy reins to David Warner ahead of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2020 season. Warner had earlier led SRH to their maiden title in 2016. The southpaw, who was banned in 2018, came back last season to win the Orange Cap. Warner will replace Kane Williamson as SRH's skipper. Here are further details.
Williamson had led SRH in 2018 and 2019
In 2018, SRH appointed Williamson as their leader in the absence of Warner. The latter returned to IPL action last year but the franchise stayed with the Kiwi star as its first-choice captain. Indian pacer Bhuvneshwar Kumar filled in as his deputy. Notably, Williamson led SRH to the IPL 2018 finale and also took the side to playoffs last season.
Warner thanks Williamson and Bhuvi for their contributions
"I'd like to thank Kane and Bhuvi for the way you guys led throughout the last couple of years, you guys did an outstanding job. And I'll be leaning on you guys for support. And to the management thank you once again for giving me this opportunity. And I'll try my very, very best to lifting that IPL Trophy this year," he added.
Warner thrilled to be given the captaincy role
"I'm thrilled to be given the captaincy for this coming IPL 2020," Warner said in a message. "I'm extremely grateful to be given the opportunity to lead the team once again."
Warner has scored immensely
Warner has been amazing for SRH across seasons since 2014. He made an instant impact in his debut season, scoring 528 runs in 14 matches at a strike rate of 140.80. Warner went on to tally 562, 848, 642 and 692 runs post that. He finished with the Orange Cap in 2015, 2017 and 2019 respectively.
