IPL umpire Nigel Llong stirs a controversy? Details here
The ICC Elite Panel umpire Nigel Llong has embroiled himself in a controversy. He is reported to have kicked a glass door at the venue during Royal Challengers Bangalore's final league match, against Sunrisers Hyderabad, in Bengaluru last Saturday. The incident happened as Llong was frustrated on giving a wrong decision during the match. Here are the further details about the same.
Llong wrongly adjudges Umesh Yadav's front-foot for no-ball
During the last over of SRH's innings, Llong called a delivery by RCB pacer Umesh Yadav a no-ball owing to his front-foot fault. However, the replays suggested that his foot was well inside the crease. This led to skipper Virat Kohli confronting Llong, while a few senior players advised Llong to stay more focused when it comes to such situations.
Llong kicked the door out of frustration
Following the match, the Karnataka State Cricket Association officials said that Llong kicked a glass door out of frustration. They also confirmed that a report was sent to the BCCI, while appropriate action is awaited. "We took up the issue today and decided to report it to the higher authorities and subsequently, we have written to the BCCI, ICC and the IPL Governing Council."
Llong fined Rs. 5,000 by KSCA
"It was an unfortunate incident. As the state association, we are duty-bound to report it. We are writing to the CoA today," KSCA secretary R Sudhakar Rao said, besides adding that a fine of Rs. 5,000 has been imposed on Llong.
Indian umpire unhappy with double standards
Meanwhile, Indian umpire S Ravi said that since Llong is a foreign, he was let away with a fine, while the same would not have been the case if it was an Indian umpire. "I can tell you with 100 percent surety that if an Indian umpire had behaved like this, he would have been banned for life the next day," Ravi said.
Ravi concerned by umpire's poor behavior
Ravi also maintained the fact that it's the umpire's duty to make sure that every individual on-field maintains a proper behavior. "It's the behavior of an Elite Panel umpire that's a cause of concern for us. We are supposed to be controlling the behavior of players, but if we only behave like this, then what behavior can we expect from them?" questioned Ravi.
IPL umpiring standards need to improve
While we condemn the improper act by Llong, the umpiring standard this IPL has been poor once again. With no-ball misses to wrong calls and incorrect decisions, the umpiring standard has hit a new low, while tons of players have questioned it. Thus, the author feels that the BCCI focuses its efforts to improve the standards in order to avoid such controversies further.
