IPL 2019: Chennai might not host play-offs, details here

    What's the story

Although the IPL 2019 is yet to reach its halfway mark, the preparations for the play-offs are already underway.

Meanwhile, the BCCI is not certain if it would allow Chennai's MA Chidambaram Stadium to host the play-offs.

The issue has popped up owing to the three closed stands at the venue.

In the same light, the BCCI has kept the other venues on stand-by.

    Latest story

Hyderabad and Bangalore chosen as standby venue options

The BCCI has opted for Hyderabad and Bangalore as standby venues, in case Chennai fails to open the three stands.

These venues were chosen given their seating capacity.

The BCCI does not want to incur financial losses by hosting the play-offs in Chennai with three closed stands, and thereby artificially reducing the number of people watching the match in the stadium.

    Reason

Why Chennai stadium has three closed stands?

The three stands at Chepauk (I, J and K) have not been opened since 2012 due to TNCA's inability to obtain a fit certificate from the local municipal corporation.

In 2015, the Supreme Court had stated that the stands were constructed without appropriate permissions, while they violate the regulations for public safety.

The court has also ordered for the demolition of the three stands.

    Quote

BCCI does not want to deprive CSK of home advantage

A BCCI official said, "We will have discussions with TNCA as we don't want to deprive Chennai Super Kings their right of playing at home. But, three empty stands is an issue. Hyderabad and Bengaluru are two standby venues for two play-offs, eliminator and final."

    Other agendas

BCCI also plans on inviting fresh tenders for title sponsorship

Apart from this issue, the BCCI is also planning on releasing fresh tenders for title sponsorship in India.

The sponsorship would be for domestic and international cricket in India.

Paytm was the former sponsor, and they will have to bid again if they need to retain the rights.

Paytm's last sponsorship deal was of Rs. 203 crore, or Rs. 2.42 crore per match.

    What's next?

What's next for CSK and Chepauk?

As of now, CSK are all set to play their remaining home matches in Chennai.

They are also the hot favorites to qualify for the play-offs.

However, missing out on their home turf during the play-offs might affect them.

Meanwhile, it is not sure how Chepauk would handle this issue.

Nonetheless, it can continue to host other matches with three stands closed.
