Tokyo 2020: IOC still considering possible scenarios, says Thomas Bach
International Olympic Committee (IOC) president Thomas Bach stated that the committee is observing a number of scenarios for the upcoming Tokyo 2020 Games in the wake of coronavirus pandemic. According to Bach, it would be premature to make any decision with the Olympics over four months away. Besides, there are number of speculations that the ongoing outburst may defer the Olympics.
Postponing the Olympics will be premature: Thomas Bach
"We are considering different scenarios, but we are contrary to many other sports organisations or professional leagues in that we are four-and-a-half months away from the Games. For us, postponement wouldn't be responsible now and it would be premature to start speculation," Bach said.
The organisers are still hopeful of staging Olympics without delay
The Tokyo Games, which are originally scheduled to commence on July 24, are deemed the latest victim of COVID-19 (novel coronavirus). Although the IOC and organisers are hopeful of staging the event as scheduled, the growing concerns have thrust the Games into a cloud of uncertainty. Earlier, the festivities related to the Olympic torch relay were reduced as a preventive measure.
Japan Olympic Committee deputy was tested positive
Earlier this week, Japan Olympic Committee deputy chief Kozo Tashima was tested positive for the coronavirus. Tashima revealed that he was traveling since February 28 for several business trips. "Today, my test result showed positive for the new coronavirus. I have a mild fever. Examinations showed a symptom of pneumonia, but I'm fine," he said in a statement issued by Japan Football Association.
Only 57 percent of athletes have confirmed participation in qualifiers
With most of the sporting events around the world being scrapped, the Olympic qualifying tournament also suffered to an extent. As of now, 43 percent of athletes are yet to book their spots for the event. Nobody today can tell you what the developments are tomorrow, what they are in one month, not to mention in more than four months," Bach further added.
