Intercontinental Cup 2024: India aim for trophy versus Syria
The Indian football team is set to face Syria in the three-team Intercontinental Cup 2024 final on Monday. The match will take place at the GMC Balayogi Athletic Stadium in Hyderabad. This game represents a significant opportunity for the Blue Tigers to secure a maiden trophy under new head coach Manolo Marquez. India were earlier held 0-0 by Mauritius whereas Syria defeated Mauritius 2-0. The winner between India and Syria now will win the trophy.
Syria are the favorites to land the trophy
Syria are currently leading the group phase with three points after their 2-0 win over Mauritius. A draw against India would be enough for them to clinch the tournament, marking their first trophy win under new coach Jose Lana. On the other hand, India need to beat Syria to win the trophy. Meanwhile, a draw would hand Syria the trophy.
Marquez emphasizes style of play over victory
Despite the high stakes, Marquez is prioritizing good football over winning. "I don't want to win it 1-0, scoring with the hand. At this moment, I want the team to understand our ideas and play better because finally, it's not about winning or losing," he said in a press conference. The Spanish coach plans to make changes in India's lineup against Syria due to a lackluster performance in their previous match against Mauritius.
Marquez reveals lineup changes for final match
Marquez has confirmed that Subhasish Bose will replace Jay Gupta as left-back in the upcoming match against Syria. Anwar Ali may step in for Chinglesana Singh and join Rahul Bheke in defense, with Nikhil Poojary completing the backline. Despite Syria's strong offense, it's unlikely that Marquez will disrupt the midfield duo of Lalengmawia (Apuia) Ralte and Jeakson Singh. Sahal Abdul Samad is expected to take on the role of advanced midfielder, replacing Anirudh Thapa.
India's forward line and Syria's advantage
For the forward line, India are likely to rely on Liston Colaco, Manvir Singh and Lallianzuala Chhangte. Marquez also has youngster Kiyan Nassiri ready for his national debut. However, the Spaniard noted that Indian players are not at the desired level of physical peak as they are still in pre-season. In contrast, Syrian players have already begun their full season with club football which could give them an edge in the match.
Syria's coach Lana prepares for match against India
Syrian coach Lana is also planning changes for the match against India but has not disclosed specifics. In their previous game against Mauritius, captain Mahmoud Al Mawas led Syria's offense and is expected to be a key player in the final. Centre-back Thaer Krouma, who plays for Mumbai City FC, could be a crucial part of Syria's defense due to his familiarity with Indian players' styles.
