Tennis: Ons Jabeur's season cut short due to shoulder injury
Tunisian tennis sensation, Ons Jabeur, has announced an early end to her 2024 season owing to a recurrant shoulder injury. The three-time Grand Slam finalist made this decision public after struggling with health issues that have seen her global ranking drop to 22nd. She had previously pulled out of several tournaments, including the Cincinnati Open, Washington Open, and the US Open because of her shoulder problem.
Jabeur reflects on challenging year and recovery plans
Jabeur, the former world number two (WTA Rankings), expressed her disappointment over the challenging year. She stated on social media, "This year has been extremely hard for me, and as athletes we know that recovery is part of the journey." The 30-year-old tennis star announced that she has decided to step off the tennis circuit for the rest of this season due to her ongoing shoulder injury.
Jabeur's health struggles extend beyond shoulder injury
In addition to her shoulder problem, Jabeur has also been dealing with a right knee issue that required surgery earlier this year. This led to her missing the WTA 1000 event in Dubai. She also retired during her quarter-final against Coco Gauff at the Berlin Open. Illness further marred her season, which forced her to pull out of Wimbledon and most recently, the Paris Olympics.
Jabeur to focus on philanthropy during recovery period
During her recovery period, Jabeur plans to dedicate her time to philanthropic work. She stated, "While I'm taking time to heal, I'll be dedicating myself to charity work and ensuring that we make a real difference in the world." The Tunisian tennis star aims for a comeback at the start of next year in Australia.
