The Indian cricket team got a huge sigh of relief after scan reports revealed that Vijay Shankar didn't suffer any fracture. The all-rounder was hit on his right forearm by a Khaleel Ahmed delivery at the nets during a training session on Friday. In Shankar's absence, KL Rahul was tried at number four against New Zealand on Saturday. Rahul, who is generally a back-up top order batsman, failed to shine with the bat. He might get one more chance at number four against Bangladesh. It remains to be seen if India would go in with Shankar in their opening tie against South Africa.

Shankar was drafted into the World Cup squad after some decent outings for the side leading to the World Cup. He wasted the opportunities though against Australia in March and his inexperience was highlighted. But the selectors were confident regarding him. Shankar will need to step up his game and prove the critics wrong. He will be monitored in the first couple of matches.
