Bopanna-Matkowski duo reach Dubai Open final
India's Rohan Bopanna and his Polish partner Marcin Matkowski marched into the final of Dubai Open, knocking out the Indian-Spanish duo of Leander Paes and Guillermo Garcia-Lopez. Bopanna-Matkowski, who entered the ATP 500 tournament as unseeded pair, won the semis 6-3, 3-6, 10-6. This is Bopanna's second best performance of the season after having won the doubles event at ATP 250 Chennai Open.
Dubai Tennis Championships
Dubai Tennis Championships is an ATP 500 Men's event and a 'WTA Premier 5' (900 points event) women's event. It started as a Men's Open in 1993 and the Women's tournament debuted in 2001. Winners of 2016 edition include : Men's Singles - Stan Wawrinka, Women's Singles - Sara Errani, Men's Doubles - Simone Bolelli/Andreas Seppi, Womens' Doubles - Chuang Chia-jung/Darija Jurak.
2017 Dubai Open
The 2017 Dubai Tennis Championships was scheduled from 19 Feb - 4 March (Women's Open 19-25 Feb; Men's Open 27 Feb - 4 March). The $2.6 million hard court event will be played at the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Stadium.
Indian players in action
Sania Mirza along with her Czech partner Barbora Strycova entered the Women's Doubles seeded as the No.3 pair. They lost the Semis 4-6, 3-6 to Russia's Ekaterina Makarova/Elena Vesnina, who then went on to win the final. On the Men's side of the tournament, India's Leander Paes and Rohan Bopanna started their campaigns with their respective partners Guillermo Garcia-Lopez and Marcin Matkowski.
Women's Singles winner and Men's Singles results
Women's Singles contended by the likes of Angelique Kerber, Karolina Pliskova, Garbine Muguruza, was won by Ukraine's Elina Svitlona who beat Caroline Wozniacki in the final. The ongoing Men's Singles had some upsets including the first round exit of defending champion Wawrinka, and second round ouster of Roger Federer. Andy Murray who awaits to play the Semis, is the favorite to win the tournament.
