Tbilisi Grand Prix: Wrestler Bajrang Punia claims gold medal
Indian star wrestler Bajrang Punia's superb form has continued. Punia managed to defend his title at the Tbilisi Grand Prix being held in Georgia. He prevailed 2-0 over Iran's Peiman Bibyani in the 65kg final of the men's freestyle competition. This is a big boost for Punia ahead of the World Championships to be held in Nur-Sultan, Kazakhstan in September. Here's more.
Bajrang claims fourth gold medal in 2019
Bajrang picked up his fourth gold medal in 2019 and it has been a stunning ride for the famed wrestler so far. Prior to this great show, he won gold medals at Dan Kolov, Asian Championship, and Ali Aliev tournament. Bajrang prevailed 2-0 over Iran's Peiman Bibyani in the 65kg final of the men's freestyle competition.
Bajrang prepares for the World Championships
This was an opportunity for Punia to get serious game time and prepare himself for the World Championships. According to a report in The Times of India, Punia hadn't taken a part in any competition for 3-4 months. He participated in this competition to gauge his preparation level for the mega event. He also said that there are areas he needs to focus on.
Bajrang aims for third medal at World Championships
Bajrang had earlier won a bronze medal in 2013 and a silver in 2018 World Championships. He will be keen to add a third medal in his kitty. This is also set to be his sixth attempt in the competition. The wrestler added that he is aiming to use all his experience for the competition.
Medved event: Vinesh continues to shine
Meanwhile, women's wrestler Vinesh Phogat reached her fourth final at Medved event. At the Medved event in Minsk, Belarus, Vinesh outclassed Yafremenka 11-0 in the 53kg semi-finals and is in line for her fourth consecutive gold. She will face Russia's N Malisheva next. Malisheva blanked local girl Pichkouskay 6-0. Vinesh had bagged the top honors at Spain GP, Yasar Dogu International, and Poland Open.
