Mary Kom enters the quarterfinals of Asian Boxing Championships
India's MC Mary Kom advanced into the quarterfinals of Asian Boxing Championships beating local favorite Diem Thi Trinh Kieu, in her opening round bout in Vietnam. This is the Olympic bronze medallist's first major tournament since the 2016 World Championships. She will now face Meng-Chieh Ping from Chinese Taipei in the quarter-final. Kom is a four-time championship winner, with her latest win in 2012.
Asian Confederation Boxing Championships
Asian Confederation Women's Boxing Elite Championships is a biennial event which first took place in 2001. The 2017 Championships has been scheduled to take place from 2-12 November at Ho Chi Minh city, Vietnam. India is the third most successful country in the championship history with 19 gold, 21 silver, and 20 bronze medals, after China and DPR Korea.
Indian squad at the Asian Boxing Championships
A 10-member squad is participating at the Asian Boxing Championships from India. This includes the likes of five-time world champion and Olympic bronze medallist MC Mary Kom, five-time Asian Championship winner Sarita Devi, World Championships' silver-medallist Sonia Lather, last Asian Championship silver medallist Saweety Boora, Pooja Rani, Seema Punia, Neeraj, Priyanka Chaudhary, Lovelina, and Shiksha Singh.
India assured of a medal with Punia in the Semis
Indian squad already has a medal in bag with Seema Punia in the Semifinals of the Asian Boxing Championships. With only four boxers in her weight category (81+), Punia is assured of at the least a bronze medal.
