Happy birthday Harmanpreet Kaur
The captain of the Indian Women's T20I side, Harmanpreet Kaur is celebrating her 29th birthday today. The right-handed cricketer, who was born in Moga, is one of India's most decorated women cricketers. Harmanpreet is also a recipient of the prestigious Arjuna Award, which she won in 2017. Here are some lesser known facts about her.
Her 171* run-innings is a record
Harmanpreet Kaur smashed an unbeaten 171 off just 115 balls against Australia in the semi-final of 2017 ICC Women's World Cup. This is the highest individual score by an Indian women cricketer at the ICC World Cup. Harmanpreet's 171 is also the second highest score by an Indian woman in ODIs after Deepti Sharma's 188 runs.
First Indian to be signed by a BBL franchise
Harmanpreet Kaur is the first Indian woman to be signed by an overseas T20 franchise. Harmanpreet was signed by Sydney Thunder for the Women's Big Bash League for the 2016-17 season. She is not only the first Indian cricketer to sign a Big Bash contract but is also the first Indian player to sign for ECB's Kia Super League.
She made her debut against Pakistan
Harmanpreet made her ODI debut against Pakistan in 2009 Women's World Cup. Indian won the game by 10 wickets. Her T20I debut followed soon as she played her first match against England the same year, in the ICC Women's World T20. Harmanpreet is an all-rounder who can clear the ropes with ease and can also bowl spin.
She is Deputy Superintendent of Police in Punjab
Harmanpreet, who was named in the ICC T20I Team of the Year for 2017, took up a job as the DSP with the Punjab Police on March 1st. Earlier she was employed with the Indian Railways.
