Shivam Mavi won't compromise on pace despite multiple injuries
Indian fast bowler Shivam Mavi has made a resolute statement about his commitment to maintaining his bowling speed, despite enduring four stress fractures in his back and a Grade II knee injury. At 25, Mavi has already represented the Indian cricket team in six T20Is. He is currently staging a comeback after being out of action for an entire year due to these injuries.
Mavi's return to competitive cricket after a year
Mavi's last competitive cricket match was in August 2023. He opted out of the entire domestic season for Uttar Pradesh and the Indian Premier League (IPL) due to a recurring stress fracture. After recovering from the same, Mavi recently returned action in the Uttar Pradesh T20 League. Although his performance was not exceptional, he expressed relief at being able to bowl again in a competitive game.
Mavi's determination and future aspirations
Mavi's rehabilitation was delayed due to the recurrence of his injury during the IPL. He stated, "Now I am fit and feeling good. I am trying to get my rhythm back." Despite numerous injuries, Mavi remains determined not to give up his passion for cricket. He aspires to represent India across formats, a goal that kept him motivated through his recovery process.
Mavi's early career and journey with injuries
Mavi first gained recognition in 2018 during the Under-19 World Cup, where he showcased his raw pace alongside Kamlesh Nagarkoti. Despite their promising start, both players have faced significant challenges due to injuries. Mavi has made numerous trips to the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru for treatment and rehabilitation. He recently spent a month at NCA with Nagarkoti, where they shared their common dream of bowling together for India.
Mavi's challenges and optimism amid recovery
Mavi admitted that finding his rhythm post-injury has been a challenge. He stated, "Rehab is repetitive. But after so many injuries, I have made peace with it." Despite these hurdles, Mavi remains optimistic about his future in cricket. The speedster now plans to adopt a smarter approach to stay injury-free.
Mavi's commitment to maintaining his bowling speed
Despite his injuries, Mavi is determined not to compromise on his bowling speed. He believes that pace is what brought him recognition and that bowling below 140km/h makes it easier for batsmen. He stated, "I have tried to stick to that pace." This commitment showcases Mavi's dedication toward his craft and his unwavering resolve to overcome challenges in pursuit of his cricketing goals.
