India's HS Prannoy takes indefinite break from badminton: Here's why
HS Prannoy, India's top-ranked badminton player, has announced an indefinite hiatus from the sport to prioritize his health. The decision comes after his Round of 16 men's singles defeat at the 2024 Paris Olympics. Despite battling Chikungunya just weeks before the tournament, Prannoy participated but was noticeably slower and less agile than usual during the competition. He lost the pre-quarterfinals to his compatriot Lakshya Sen in straight games (21-12, 21-6).
Prannoy's performance impacted by health challenges
Prannoy's campaign at the 2024 Paris Olympics was significantly affected by his health issues. HS Prannoy had a memorable Olympics debut as he beat Germany's Fabian Roth. Prannoy then staged an incredible fightback against Vietnam's Le Duc Phat. He won the match after being a game down. Prannoy's run came to an end with his defeat to Sen.
Prannoy announces break to focus on recovery
Prannoy has now shared his decision to withdraw from upcoming tournaments and focus on his health through a post on X. "Unfortunately, the battle with Chikungunya has taken a toll on my body, leaving me with persistent pains that make it impossible to compete at my best," he wrote. He thanked his fans for their understanding and support during this challenging time, promising to return stronger after his recovery period.
Prannoy's successful career
It is worth noting that Prannoy has been one of India's most consistent performers in badminton. He went on to win the bronze medal in the 2023 BWF World Championships in Copenhagen. The Indian shuttler defeated world number one Viktor Axelsen in the quarter-finals to ensure the bronze medal. Prannoy has won gold in the Thomas Cup, CWG, and the South Asian Games.
