Umesh comes from a humble background and his father used to work in a coalmine. He quit studies after class XII as he had no interest in pursuing academics. He wanted to join the Indian army and serve the country, but destiny had some other plans for him. At one point of time, interestingly, Umesh also wanted to become a police constable.
Umesh has been a consistent force in IPL
Umesh was included in the Central Zone squad for the domestic tournament in 2008. The 21-year-old back then was bought by the Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise Delhi Daredevils. However, Umesh made his IPL debut in the year 2010. Since 2013, after two mediocre seasons, Umesh has been a consistent performer in IPL. In 108 matches, he has 111 scalps to his name.

Umesh started his cricket career with a tennis ball. He had played with the leather ball for only a month, when he made his Ranji debut in 2008. But despite the lack of the experience, he was an instant hit in domestic circuit. He got the national call-up in the year 2010. And a year later, he made his Test debut against West Indies.

Umesh gained prominence with time and his best moment came in the ICC 2015 World Cup. He picked 18 wickets in the tournament to finish as the third highest wicket taker.
