IM Vijayan's inspiring journey: From soda seller to Padma awardee
What's the story
Kerala's football legend Inivalappil Mani Vijayan has been conferred the Padma Shri 2025.
The award, India's fourth-highest civilian honor, recognizes Vijayan's immense contribution to the field of sports.
"I dedicate my award to every football fan in the country. What I am today is because of them," he said.
At 55, he has been honored with the prestigious award, becoming the first footballer from Kerala to do so.
Early life
Vijayan's humble beginnings and rise to fame
Born on April 25, 1969 in Thrissur, Kerala, Vijayan had a humble beginning.
To help his family financially, he sold soda bottles at the Thrissur Municipal Corporation Stadium as a child.
His love for football was sparked while watching local players at this very stadium.
At 17, his raw talent was spotted by M.K. Joseph (the then Director General of Police in Kerala), who introduced him to the Kerala Police football team.
Career highlights
Vijayan's illustrious football career and achievements
Vijayan's career soared in the late 1980s, as he emerged as one of India's most promising young footballers.
He represented the Indian national team in 88 matches, scoring 39 goals.
In the 1990s, he formed a deadly strike partnership with Bhaichung Bhutia, taking India to many victories including three SAFF Championships and a gold medal at the South Asian Games.
His club-level career was equally stellar, having played for major Indian clubs like Mohun Bagan, East Bengal, JCT Mills and FC Kochin.
Recognition and legacy
Vijayan was honored with Arjuna Award in 2003
One of Vijayan's most memorable moments came during the 1999 SAF Games when he scored against Bhutan just 12 seconds after kickoff, marking one of the fastest goals in international football history.
He was named AIFF Player of the Year thrice (1992, 1997, and 2000) and was conferred the Arjuna Award in 2003.
However, his Padma Shri nomination in 2010 didn't yield an award until now.
