Wriddhiman Saha likely to miss England Test series
India's Test wicket-keeper, Wriddhiman Saha, might miss out on making the squad list for India's upcoming Test series against England owing to a thumb injury. Dinesh Karthik, Kolkata Knight Riders captain, is most likely to be called up as Saha's replacement. Karthik had also featured in the one-off Test against Afghanistan. However, before that, he had played an international Test series back in 2010.
Details of the injury
Wriddhiman Saha had suffered a thumb injury during the IPL when he was playing for Sunrisers Hyderabad, against KKR, in the second qualifier. His injury prevented him from taking part in the one-off Test against Afghanistan, at Bengaluru, in June. Saha was rested to ensure that he gets fit for the England tour, but he has not recovered to start the series.
Comparing Dinesh Karthik and Wriddhiman Saha
Saha has been the rock, behind the wicket, ever since Dhoni retired from Tests. His unparalleled athleticism and anticipatory skills make him one of the best wicket-keepers of this generation. Notably, Karthik has enjoyed a great run in 2018 and if he is able to carry his batting form, he could be a great addition. However, his Test average of 27.14 is unimpressive.
Impact on the tour
With Saha being ruled out and DK taking his place, it wouldn't be wrong to admit that India might be at a disadvantage. DK has a history of dismal performances, behind the wicket, in Tests. He will have to bat well in order to make up for his mediocre keeping. One can only hope that the replacement keeper makes full use of the opportunity.
Any other option?
India also have other wicket-keepers who can be tried out. Besides Karthik, the experienced Parthiv Patel could be given a chance. Patel had impressed in a Test against England at Mohali, where he had slammed two half-centuries. Rishabh Pant is enjoying the form of his life in T20Is and can be tried out keeping the long term in mind.
