ICC Women's T20 World Cup: India qualify for maiden final
India have advanced to the final ICC Women's T20 World Cup for the first time after their semi-final clash against England Women washed out. It had been raining since morning, and the downpour continued as the umpires and the referee decided to call the play around 10:44 IST. The match, which was scheduled at the Sydney Cricket Ground, was abandoned without a ball being bowled.
India qualified for final as they topped Group A
The Harmanpreet-led side finished on top of Group A, having won all their four matches in the group stage. Meanwhile, England were the second-placed side in Group B with six points. As per rules, India got through to the final as they were the higher standing side after the league stage. India will now face winner of the other semi-final at Melbourne Cricket Ground.
Congratulations, Team India
An elated Harmanpreet Kaur vouches for a reserve day
"It is unfortunate not to get a game. In future, it would be nice to have a reserve day. We knew that we have to win all the games. It would have been hard, had we not got a game in semi-final," Harmanpreet said.
South Africa will likely book a spot in final
While rain played the spoilsport in the what was expected to be a high-voltage clash, the second semi-final between South Africa and Australia is likely to be washed out as well. The two teams had to stake claim for the final at the same venue. South Africa will get through after having finished on top in Group B, if the match gets called off.
A historic feat for Team India!
Team India would feature in their first ever final of the ICC Women's T20 World Cup, on Sunday. They were unbeaten in the pre-playoff stage, having trounced Australia, Bangladesh, New Zealand and Sri Lanka. Both India and South Africa have never won the World Cup title, while Australia have clinched it four times. The iconic Melbourne Cricket Ground will host the final.
