BCCI declines offer to host 2024 Women's T20 World Cup
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) secretary, Jay Shah, has confirmed that India will not host the 2024 ICC Women's T20 World Cup. This announcement comes amid growing concerns about the scheduled tournament in Bangladesh, wher a civil unrest has been escalating. As per the original schedule, the competition is set to kick off on October 3 across two venues in Bangladesh.
Political unrest raises concerns over tournament's viability
The political instability in Bangladesh, marked by a student-led uprising that resulted in Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina leaving the country, has raised questions about the feasibility of hosing the T20 World Cup there. In response to these concerns, Shah stated that India will not serve as an alternative host if a venue change becomes necessary. The BCCI had been approached by the International Cricket Council for this possibility but declined due to ongoing monsoon season and other commitments.
Shah cites reasons for declining offer
Shah clarified his decision during an interaction at the TOI's Mumbai office. "They had asked the BCCI if they can host the event, but I flatly refused. I do not want to give the impression that I want to host consecutive World Cups," he said. It is worth noting that India is due to host the 50-overs Women's World Cup next year.
ICC to decide on tournament's venue amid uncertainty
The ICC is closely monitoring the situation in Bangladesh and is expected to make a decision soon regarding the 2024 Women's T20 World Cup venue. Meanwhile, the men's Bangladesh cricket team has traveled to Pakistan for a two-match Test series. They flew early due to disruptions in their practice schedule back home caused by the ongoing civil unrest.
Australia to enter as defending champions
Australia are the defending champions of the Women's T20 World Cup. The Meg Lanning-led side defeated hosts South Africa in the final to lift the trophy. Meanwhile, India Women failed to reach the semi-finals.
