India vs England: Interesting stats from Day 3
Cheteshwar Pujara and Rishbah Pant led India's recovery after they lost four quick wickets on Day 3 of the ongoing first Test. The duo put up a 119-run stand before perishing. The longest first innings in Tests since 2004/05
After playing for a little over two days, the England innings finally folded on 578. The tourists played as many as 190.1 overs to achieve this total. This has become the longest first innings in Test cricket (overs) since 2004/05 when South Africa batted out 190.4 overs against India (Kanpur). England are the fourth side to bat over 190 overs in India since 2000.
England have an advantage in the Test
Interestingly, no team has lost a Test in India after batting for 190+ overs in an innings. In the last five such instances, India have done so twice (210 vs AUS and 190.4 vs ENG). SL (202.4) and SA (190.4) are also on the tally.
Most overs bowled by Ashwin in a Test innings
Ravichandran Ashwin bowled as many as 55.1 overs in the first innings. This is the most overs bowled by Ashwin in a Test innings. His previous record was 53.0 versus Australia in Adelaide, 2011/12. In India, the most overs bowled by him was 52.3 (vs ENG, Kolkata, 2012/13) Against England, he claimed the joint-most wickets (3) in the first innings along with Jasprit Bumrah.
Ashwin completes 300 Test wickets in Asia
During the innings, Ashwin became the fifth bowler and third from India to complete 300 Test wickets in Asia. He is now behind Muttiah Muralitharan (612), Anil Kumble (419) and Rangana Herath (354). Notably, Ashwin equaled Harbhajan Singh (300) on the tally.
Pant misses out on another Test ton
Wicket-keeper Pant continued his incredible run in Test cricket following a successful Australian tour. He played the rescuer alongside Cheteshwar Pujara after the Indians were in disarray. However, he failed to make it to three figures once again in the format. The 23-year-old was dismissed on 91, playing a rash stroke off Dom Bess. This could have been his maiden Test ton in India.
Pujara and Pant keep India afloat
Pujara and Pant batted well together after India were reduced to 73/4. Their century-plus stand helped India recover. Of late, the calmness of Pujara and Pant's aggression have been beneficial for India. Their last four partnerships are 53, 148, 61, 119.
Another 90+ score without scoring a hundred
Pant has registered three 50+ scores in his last five Test innings. His scores during the period read as 91, 89*, 23, 97 and 36. Pant has now recorded three 90+ scores in India, but failed to convert them into hundreds (92, 92 and 91). Overall, he has registered four 90+ scores without scoring a ton, joint-second-most by a wicket-keeper in Test history.
