How did Day 4 pan out?

Eventually, the England innings folded on 178, with Ashwin tearing through the batting line-up.
Chasing a mammoth 420, the hosts made an ideal start as Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill played freely.
However, Rohit soon fell to off-spinner Jack Leach. As a result, India finished on 39/1 at stumps.

Root scripts another record
English captain Joe Root has been on a spree of breaking records in 2021. With a swift knock of 40, he now has sixth-highest runs after 100 Tests.

Ashwin achieves a unique feat in Test cricket
Ashwin took a wicket on the first ball of England's innings. This has happened in Tests after 113 years. The last time a spinner took a wicket on first ball of an innings was when SA's Bert Vogler dismissed Tom Hayward of England (The Oval).
Ishant Sharma
Ishant Sharma completes 300 Test wickets
Earlier in the day, pace spearhead Ishant Sharma became only the third Indian fast bowler after Kapil Dev and Zaheer Khan to take 300 wickets in Test cricket.
The 32-year-old achieved the milestone in the second session on Day 4.
Overall, Ishant is the sixth Indian cricketer to take 300 wickets in the format.
He dismissed Daniel Lawrence in the innings.
Sundar
Sundar remained unbeaten on 85
All-rounder Sundar and Ashwin led India's recovery on Day 4 after they lost Rishabh Pant yesterday. The duo shared an 80-run stand.
With an unbeaten 85, Sundar has become the eighth Indian to score 50+ in debut innings both at home and away.
He played a crucial knock of 62 in the Brisbane Test against Australia Down Under, his debut innings in Test cricket.
India
Team India can't be written off!
Considering India's recent few matches Down Under, India can't be written off even though the target is in excess of 400 runs.
The Indian batsmen have the propensity to endure all three sessions tomorrow.
Interestingly, Team India has lost nine Tests under Virat Kohli while chasing 150+ in 4th innings.
They have also drawn two such games.
