Ahmedabad ODI: India compile 356 against England; batters shine
What's the story
India have racked up 356/10 against England, who invited them to bat, in the 3rd and final ODI at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.
The Men in Blue were bolstered by solid knocks from Shubman Gill (112), Virat Kohli (52), and Shreyas Iyer (78). Gill set several records with his century.
Meanwhile, leg-spinner Adil Rashid took four wickets for the visitors.
Start
Gill, Kohli add 116 runs after losing Rohit early
Indian skipper Rohit Sharma, who slammed a ton in Cuttack, departed initially as Mark Wood outfoxed him.
However, Gill negotiated the seamers, who swung the ball, and kept the scoreboard ticking.
Gill added a 116-run stand with Kohli to give India impetus. He raced to his century off 95 balls.
Gill eventually hammered a 102-ball 112 (14 fours and 3 sixes).
Scores
Gill scripts history with successive fifty-plus scores
Gill has been in incredible form in the three-match ODI series. He scored 87 and 60 in the first two ODIs.
As per Cricbuzz, Gill is the seventh player with fifty-plus scores in each match of a three-ODI bilateral series for India.
He has joined Krishnamachari Srikkanth, Dilip Vengsarkar, Mohammad Azharuddin, MS Dhoni, Shreyas Iyer, and Ishan Kishan on this elite list.
Milestone
Fastest to 2,500 ODI runs
Gill also completed his 2,500th run during his innings. He is now the fastest batter to this mark, having reached here in 50 innings.
This puts him ahead of the record previously held by South African legend Hashim Amla, who scored his 2,500th run in his 53rd innings.
Among Indians, Gill went past Shreyas Iyer for this record.
Feats
First Indian with this feat
As per Cricbuzz, Gill has become the first Indian with a century at a venue in all three formats. He slammed a century in a T20I against New Zealand and an ODI against Australia, both in 2023, in Ahmedabad.
Overall, Gill joins Faf du Plessis (Wanderers, Johannesburg), David Warner (Adelaide Oval), Babar Azam (National Stadium, Karachi), and Quinton de Kock (Supersport Park, Centurion).
Kohli
Kohli shows his class
Kohli showed his class in a patchy, yet meticulous knock. However, the former's bid for an elusive century was cut short by Rashid.
Although Wood perturbed Kohli with some early swing, the latter held his fort. The latter wasn't at his usual best as he had several reprieves.
Kohli departed after scoring a 55-ball 52 (7 fours and 1 six).
Information
Kohli's 73rd ODI fifty
Kohli has recorded his first fifty-plus score in ODIs since the 2023 ICC Cricket World Cup final. He scored 54 in that match against Australia at the same venue. Kohli, India's Run Machine, now has 73rd half-centuries in ODI cricket.
Dismissal
Rashid once again dismisses Kohli
Rashid's drift and turn from a flighted ball saw Kohli edge behind.
As per ESPNcricinfo, Rashid has now dismissed Kohli five times in ODIs across 10 innings.
Rashid dismissed Kohli for the 11th time in international cricket, now the joint-most times a bowler has sent him back. The English spinner shares this record with Tim Southee and Josh Hazlewood.
Iyer
Iyer smashes his 20th ODI fifty
Iyer came in after Gill and Kohli set a solid platform. He joined forces with Gill, as the duo took India past 220.
While the latter was dismissed soon after, Iyer had century in his sights. However, Rashid removed Iyer with a rather poor delivery.
He slammed a 64-ball 78 (8 fours and 2 sixes), completing his 20th fifty in the format.
Rashid
Rashid takes four wickets
Leg-spinner Rashid was the pick of England's bowlers in Ahmedabad. He took four big wickets for 64 runs in 10 overs.
The wrist-spinner dismissed Kohli, Gill, and Iyer before getting rid of Hardik Pandya.
Pandya smacked Rashid for two successive maximums, but the latter bounced back by knocking him over.
Meanwhile, Wood snapped up two wickets, one each at both ends.
Information
Third wrist-spinner with this feat
As per Cricbuzz, Rashid has become only the third wrist-spinner with a four-wicket haul against India away from home (in India). He has joined Brad Hogg (4/49 in Nagpur, 2007) and Adam Zampa (4/45 in Chennai, 2023).
