Asia Cup 2018: Slightly nervous but excited, says Rohit Sharma
India open their Asia Cup 2018 campaign against minnows Hong Kong on Tuesday. Hong Kong will be on their way out if India win today after having lost to Pakistan earlier. It's a litmus test for stand-in skipper Rohit Sharma in the absence of Virat Kohli. Here's what the Indian opener said before the match.
WATCH: Sharma speaks about his feelings
It's a big responsibility for me: Rohit
Ahead of the first game for India in the tourney, Rohit said, "It is a big responsibility for me. I have captained the Indian team once before and this is a big tournament for me. I am slightly nervous, but excited to lead this squad in the Asia Cup." Rohit's experience will come handy here and he has the leadership attributes to do well.
Rohit has a solid record as captain
Notably, Rohit has led the Indian team, in T20Is and ODIs, a couple of times. He led India against Sri Lanka in ODIs last year at home. Rohit was also given the opportunity to captain, in the Nidahas Trophy, earlier this year. Till now, he has won every tourney for India as a skipper. This is the biggest test for the Mumbaikar.
Hong Kong match like a warm-up ahead of Pakistan battle
This is like a warm-up match for India to address some issues and be ready for the epic encounter against Pakistan tomorrow. All eyes will be on India's middle-order on how they come up and do their job. Rohit is eager to see comeback men Ambati Rayudu and Kedar Jadhav deliver the goods. The experience of the duo will help the side immensely.
