The Indian men's hockey team is preparing to defend its Asian Champions Trophy (ACT) title after a successful 2024 Paris Olympics campaign. India hold a strong track record at the Asian Champions Trophy, having won the title four times - the most by any team in tournament history. The latest victory was achieved on home soil last year., where they defeated Malaysia (4-3) in the final. This year's tournament will be held at a venue with stunning views of the Nierji Dam, featuring six teams vying for supremacy.
India's strategy and upcoming matches in ACT
India's captain, Harmanpreet Singh, emphasized the team's goal to sustain their dominance in continental championships. He noted that while their attack and penalty corners are strengths, they will emphasize a structured defense against nations like Japan, Malaysia, and Pakistan. After facing China, India are scheduled to play against Japan (September 9), Malaysia (September 11), Korea (September 12), and Pakistan (September 14). The semi-final and final are set for September 16 and September 17 respectively.
ACT: A platform for young talent and world-ranking points
The Asian Champions Trophy also serves as a platform for young players to make their mark. The tournament will feature ten players from the Olympic team alongside several newcomers. The tournament also holds significance for world ranking points, adding to its importance in the global hockey landscape. Rupinder Pal Singh has scored the highest number of goals for India in a single edition (11: 2016 edition), followed by Harmanpreet (9: 2023 edition). Mandeep Singh was adjourned as the Best Player in the 2023 edition. India have won the trophy four times, followed by Pakistan thrice. Only three nations have won the trophy in all these years (India, Pakistan, South Korea).
