India's top moments at Asian Games 2018
2018 was India's best ever campaign at the Asian Games in the history of the tournament. The Indian contingent won a total of 69 medals that included 15 gold, 24 silver and 30 bronze. They surpassed their previous best record achieved at the 2010 Asian Games where they managed to win 65. The nation enjoyed several top moments during the coveted competition. Here's more.
Amit was the lone boxer to bring cheer for India
Youngster Amit Panghal struck gold to become the lone Indian boxer to be on the podium at the 2018 Asian Games. His heroics ensured that the boxing contingent finished their campaign on a high note. The interesting aspect of the win was that he defeated former Olympic champion, Hasanboy Dusmatov of Uzbekistan. Son of a farmer, Amit shined in men's 49 kg category
India's hockey teams displayed their intensity
The women's hockey team won a silver medal at the Games. Despite being beaten by Japan 2-1 in the finale, Indian eves side led by Rani Rampal produced some stupendous moments throughout. The men's hockey team was electrifying when it broke the Asian Games record by beating Hong Kong 26-0. The win in the battle for bronze medal against Pakistan was superb as well.
Sindhu, Saina kept the spirits high in badminton
India's Olympic medalist PV Sindhu may have finished second best in a major final yet again, but she grabbed a historic individual silver medal. She became the first Indian to bag a silver in badminton's singles event. Sindhu's performances brought a lot of cheer among the fans and she maintained her composure all along. Senior ace Saina bagged a bronze to bring smiles.
Youngsters stole the show at the Games
Tejinder Pal Singh clinched the gold medal in shot put. Tejinder had to leave his ailing father behind, who is battling cancer back at home. 18-year-old Hima Das bagged a silver in the women's 400m final and broke her own national record. 22-year-old Dutee Chand showed her prowess after battling against all odds to win two silver medals. 20-year-old Neeraj bagged gold in javelin.
Shooting contingent stole the show yet again
India delivered a total of 10 medals in shooting. There were many surprises in store with teenagers Saurabh Chaudhary and Shardul Vihan impressing largely. 16-year old Chaudhary bagged a gold in 10m air pistol event. 15-year-old Vihan won a silver medal in men's double trap. Seniors Heena Sindhu and Sanjeev Rajput too showed their mettle. Overall the Indian shooters were top class.
