India vs Sri Lanka 2nd ODI: Talking points
What's the story
After a crushing defeat in the first ODI against Sri Lanka, the men in blue bounced back in style with captain Rohit Sharma leading from the front.
The Mumbai batsman cruised to his record breaking 3rd double hundred in ODIs, helping India level the series 1-1 with a 141 run drubbing of the visitors.
Here are the major talking points from the encounter.
Hitman
Rohit's record 3rd ODI double hundred
It was raining fours and sixes in Mohali, as Rohit Sharma smashed an unbeaten 208 off 153 ball to get India to a mammoth total of 392 for four.
He reached his 16th ODI ton by the end of the 40th over and nobody saw the 200 coming.
Rohit went on to thump 107 more runs off his final 37 balls.
Opener
Rohit: The ODI maestro
Rohit Sharma has grown in stature ever since he was promoted to opening the innings for India by Dhoni.
He has mastered the art of lasting though the 50 overs.
Rohit uses his first 10 overs to settle in, the next 30 to accumulate runs and the last 10 overs are for the onslaught. His strike rate in the last 27 balls was 341.
Top 3
Top order does the job for India
While Rohit Sharma stole the show with his flamboyant batting, Shikhar Dhawan and Shreyas Iyer too played exceptionally well today.
Shreyas, who made his ODI debut in the previous match, showed his doubters what he is exactly capable of, with a quick-fire 88 off just 70 balls.
Thanks to the trio, India posted their 100th 300-plus total in ODIs.
SL batting
Mathews the lone warrior
Angleo Mathews was the last warrior standing for the Sri Lankans.
The all-rounder stayed put through all odds scoring a brilliant unbeaten hundred, which went in vain. This was his second ton in ODIs.
The former Sri Lankan skipper also became the fourth Sri Lankan to reach the 5,000 run landmark as well as claim 100 ODI wickets.
Indian Bowling
Discipline the mantra for Indian bowlers
On a track where batsman fared exceptionally well, Indian bowlers were also well disciplined.
The early wickets of Tharanga and Gunathilaka set the tone for India to establish their dominance at Mohali.
Despite being on the expensive side, Chahal was the pick of the bowlers, yet again proving that he is capable of filling in the shoes of Ashwin and Jadeja.
