India beat West Indies in third ODI: Records broken
The Indian cricket team beat West Indies in the third and final ODI to take the three-match series 3-0. Batting first, India rode on Shreyas Iyer's 80-run knock to post 265/10. Rishabh Pant chipped in with 56 and Jason Holder claimed four wickets (4/34). In response, WI faltered with the bat to surrender the match. Here are further details.
How did the match pan out?
India were reduced to 42/3 before Iyer and Pant added a valiant 110-run stand. India lost their way a bit after the two departed before Sundar and Deepak Chahar shared a half-century stand. India did enough to get past 260. For WI, Holder was superb, claiming four wickets. In response, WI were reduced to 68/4 and they never quite got going.
Why does this story matter?
India didn't have the best of series in terms of their batting but they should be proud with the bowling department. In all three games, the Indian bowlers stood tall. The biggest gain for India was pacer Prasidh Krishna, who highlighted his rise. Washington Sundar impressed with his all-round show. India experimented with several players and things more or less paid off.
Iyer slams his ninth ODI fifty
Playing his 26th ODI, the 27-year-old Iyer hammered 80 from 111 deliveries, hitting nine fours. He has surpassed the 900-run mark in ODIs (947) at 41.17. He slammed his ninth ODI fifty. In seven matches, he has 346 runs versus the Windies at 57.66. This is now his best score versus WI in ODIs. He has five fifties versus West Indies.
Pant impresses with a 56-run show
Pant was the aggressive of the two batters as he slammed a 54-ball 56. The southpaw smashed six fours and a six. Playing his 24th match, Pant has raced to 715 runs at 32.50. This was his fifth ODI fifty and second versus WI. He has 263 runs versus WI at 26.30. He has raced to 478 runs on home soil.
India extend their H2H record
India and West Indies have played 136 ODI matches to date. The visiting team has managed to win 63 games. India have pocketed 67 victories. Two games ended in a tie while four encounters did not have a result. India have won seven out of their last eight ODIs against West Indies.
Unwanted record for India
No Indian batter has hit a century in the last 10 ODIs since KL Raul's 108 in the 2nd match against England in Pune last year. The last time India have had a longer century-less streak in ODIs was back in 2011 (12 ODIs).
Kohli has a poor series
Kohli scored a two-ball nought on Friday. He now has eight ODI ducks on home soil. As per statistician Umang Pabari, Kohli has the joint-most ducks in ODIs at home alongside Harbhajan Singh and Suresh Raina. Kohli managed 26 runs in the series. This is his second-lowest tally in a bilateral ODI series following 13 versus Pakistan in 2012-13.
West Indies continue to struggle
WI have struggled in ODIs of late and the inability to bat for 50 overs is worrisome. As per Cricbuzz, WI have been bowled out in 11 of the 15 ODIs since the start of 2021. They have lost 48 wickets to spin (15 matches).
Unique record for Team India
Rohit Sharma (13) Shikhar Dhawan (10), and Kohli (0) were out cheaply today. As per Umang Pabari, this is the first time ever that all three players were dismissed below 15 runs in an ODI, out of 109 matches in which they have appeared together.
