#IndiaInEngland: Records don't favor India at Edgbaston
England will script history, tomorrow, when they lock horns with India in the first Test of the series. They would be playing their 1000th Test match, the most by any cricketing nation. India had first played, at Edgbaston, 51 years ago in 1967. Notably, they have not won even a single match here. Here we decode India's record at this cricketing ground.
The first match India played at this venue
The Indian cricket team first played at Edgbaston in 1967, a match which India would wish to forget. England went out to bat first, scoring 298, with half-centuries from Barrington and Murray. India were bundled out for 92 in the first innings. The match was clearly dominated by England, which they won with a whopping 132 runs.
Not a single win by India at Edgbaston
Edgbaston has seen India play 6 Test matches, over 51 years, without a single win and just one draw. The most shocking defeat came in 2011, when England outplayed Dhoni-led India, winning the match by an innings and 242 runs. The draw came under the captaincy of Kapil Dev in 1986. Notably, India have managed to score 300+ runs, in an innings, only once.
Dismal batting performances by India
Indian batsmen have never fared well at Edgbaston. The only century, by an Indian, at this cricket ground came from the bat of Sachin Tendulkar in 1996. Sunil Gavaskar has scored the most number of runs here (216). Sachin, Viswanath and Dhoni follow suit. Dhoni had scored 77 and 74* in the two innings in the 2011 match at Edgbaston.
Indian bowlers have also not been good
Edgbaston has not even favored Indian bowlers. Chetan Sharma delivered the best performance, amongst Indians, when he picked 10 wickets in a match in 1986. Sreesanth has the worst record, at this ground, as he conceded 158 runs without picking a single wicket. In the current bowling unit, only Ishant Sharma has played, at Edgbaston, before.
