Day/Night Test: SL bowled out for 109; India extend lead
Wickets continued to tumble in the first session on Day 2 of the ongoing Day/Night Test between India and Sri Lanka in Bengaluru. Sri Lanka were bowled out for 109, with Jasprit Bumrah taking a five-wicket haul. It was his first five-for in the format at home. Meanwhile, India extended their lead despite losing opener Mayank Agarwal before tea. Here is first session report.
How did the session pan out?
Sri Lanka resumed from their overnight score of 86/6. Bumrah struck in his second over, removing Lasith Embuldeniya. In the very next over, R Ashwin got rid of Suranga Lakmal. Bumrah then dismissed Dickwella to complete his five-wicket haul. Ashwin took the final wicket of the innings as SL perished on 109. India finished on 61/1 at the stroke of tea.
Bumrah records his eighth five-for in Tests
Bumrah registered his eighth five-wicket haul in Test cricket. It was his first such haul (Tests) in India. Bumrah now has two five-fors each in West Indies, England, and South Africa. He owns one five-wicket haul each in Australia and India. Interestingly, the legendary Kapil Dev also had eight five-fors in as many Tests as Bumrah (29).
Fourth Indian bowler with five-for in D/N Tests
Bumrah is the fourth Indian bowler to record a five-wicket haul in Day/Night Tests. Ishant Sharma was the first Indian to reach this landmark with the pink ball. Axar Patel and Umesh Yadav have also achieved this feat.
Bumrah unlocks these achievements
Bumrah was the pick of Indian bowlers in the first innings. He picked five wickets for 24 runs in 10 overs (four maidens). Bumrah registered the best bowling figures by an Indian seamer against SL in Tests. He also became the 12th Indian to take 300 wickets in international cricket. As many as 120 of these wickets have come in Tests.
Vihari, Rohit take India's lead past 200
Mayank Agarwal and Rohit Sharma gave India an ideal start in the second innings. The duo shared a 42-run stand before Embuldeniya removed the former. Hanuma Vihari joined Rohit in the middle thereafter. They took India's lead past the 200-run mark.
