2nd ODI: England compile 304 against India; Jadeja takes three
What's the story
England have racked up 304 against India in the 2nd ODI at the Barabati Stadium, Cuttack.
The visitors were led by substantial knocks from Ben Duckett (65) and Joe Root (69), while Ravindra Jadeja took three wickets for India.
Notably, Rohit Sharma is featuring in his 50th ODI as captain. And Varun Chakravarthy received the coveted ODI cap after a stellar T20I series.
Start
A fine start for England
Like the series opener, Duckett and Philip Salt added a fifty-plus opening partnership after skipper Jos Buttler elected to bat.
The duo added 75 runs in the first 10 overs as India couldn't draw first blood.
Chakravarthy dismissed Salt soon after, which marked the former's maiden wicket in ODI cricket. Duckett was joined by Root in the middle thereafter.
Duckett
Duckett slams his sixth ODI fifty
While Salt played second fiddle, Duckett attacked from the other end. The latter joined forces with Root thereafter.
However, Jadeja dismissed Duckett against the run of play in the 16th over. The England batter slammed a 56-ball 65 (10 fours).
In 18 ODIs, the England opener has smashed 797 runs at an average of 46.88. His tally includes six fifties and two tons.
Chakravarthy
Debutant Chakravarthy takes one wicket
Debutant Chakravarthy returned a solitary wicket for 54 runs in 10 overs.
As per Cricbuzz, he is the second-oldest debutant for India in ODIs, at 33 years and 164 days. He is only behind Farookh Engineer (36y 138d), who made his debut in 1974 against England in Leeds.
Chakravarthy is India's oldest debutant outside of their inaugural match in the ODI format in 1974.
Root
England ride on Root's meticulous knock
Root survived a close DRS call on his very first delivery of the match. He led England's recovery after both Salt and Duckett were back to the pavilion.
Root added 66 runs with Harry Brook in the middle phase. The duo constantly rotated the strike.
Root added another brief stand with Buttler before falling to Jadeja. He scored a 72-ball 69 (6 fours).
Milestone
Root goes past Eoin Morgan
Root registered his 40th half-century in ODI cricket. He also has 16 tons in the format.
The 34-year-old now has the most fifty-plus scores for England in ODIs, breaking a tie with his former captain, Eoin Morgan.
Root owns 56 such scores compared to Morgan's 55. The latter recorded 42 ODI fifties.
No other England batter has even 40 fifty-plus scores in ODIs.
Information
England cross 300 with Livingstone's cameo
England suffered lower-order collapse after Root's dismissal. They went down from 248/4 to 297/8. However, Liam Livingstone's 32-ball 41 gave England impetus at the death. Adil Rashid too smacked 3 fours to top it. Jamie Overton, Livingstone, and Mark Wood were run-out eventually.
Jadeja
Jadeja takes three wickets
Jadeja was the pick of India's bowlers in the match. He took three wickets for just 36 runs in 10 overs. Notably, Jadeja bowled the only maiden over for an Indian bowler.
Mohammed Shami, Harshit Rana, Chakravarthy, and Pandya took a wicket apiece. Pandya produced a crucial breakthrough in the form of Buttler, who scored a pivotal 35-ball 34 (2 fours).
