1st Test: All-round India continue to dominate Bangladesh in Chennai
Team India is all over Bangladesh in the ongoing Test series opener at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai. Day 2 of the contest saw the Tigers being bundled out for 149 while responding to India's first innings score of 376. India, who decided not to enforce the follow-on, finished the day at 81/3. Here we look at the Day 2 report.
Taskin's early strikes dented India
Taskin Ahmed, who had not taken a wicket on the opening day, made significant contributions on Day 2. He claimed the first three wickets of the day as India managed 376 after resuming at 339/6. His early strikes included dismissing Ravindra Jadeja (86) and Akash Deep, before sending back yesterday's top-scorer, Ravichandran Ashwin (113). Hasan Mahmud dismissed Jasprit Bumrah to complete his fifer.
Three-fer for Taskin
As per ESPNcricinfo, Taskin finished with 3/55 in 21 overs. The 29-year-old, who made his Test debut in January 2017, has now raced to 37 wickets in 15 Tests at a higher average of 45.86. Taskin, who has three four-fers under his belt, is yet to take a fifer. 32 of his wickets have come in away games at 48.43.
2nd Test fifer for Mahmud
Mahmud finished with figures worth 5/83 across 22.2 overs. Mahmud made his Test debut against Sri Lanka earlier this year. Despite Bangladesh's loss in both Tests, he left a mark by recording six wickets in the 2nd game. He continued this form into Bangladesh's historic 2-0 away series victory over Pakistan. Playing his fourth Test, he has raced to 19 wickets at 22.78.
Do you know?
Besides Mahmud and Taskin, Nahid Rana also took a wicket. As per Cricbuzz, this was just the sixth occasion of Bangladesh pacers claiming nine or more wickets in a Test innings. This was also the first instance of pacers scalping nine wickets in a Test innings in Chennai in this century.
21st Test fifty for Jadeja
Jadeja could not add anything to his overnight score as he was dismissed for 86 off 124 balls (10 fours, 2 sixes). As per ESPNcricinfo, this was Jadeja's 21st Test fifty as his tally also includes four tons. He has raced to 3,122 Test runs at 36.72. 234 of his runs have come against Bangladesh at 117 (50s: 3).
Ashwin, Jadeja missed out on this record
As per ESPNcricinfo, Ashwin and Jadeja recorded India's highest seventh-wicket stand against Bangladesh in Tests (199). They, however, missed out on becoming just the fifth Indian pair to record a double-century stand against the Tigers in red-ball cricket. They would have joined Shikhar Dhawan-Murali Vijay, Gautam Gambhir-Rahul Dravid, Dravid-Sachin Tendulkar, and Virat Kohli-Ajinkya Rahane.
A poor outing for Bangladesh batters
In reply, Bangladesh never got going as Jasprit Bumrah drew the first blood, dismissing Shadman Islam. Akash Deep then trapped Zakir Hasan and Mominul Haque on successive balls. Shakib Al Hasan (32) and Litton Das (22) added 51 runs after the visitors were reduced to 40/5. However, both set batters were dismissed in quick succession. Mehidy Hasan Miraz's 27* took Bangladesh to 149/10.
How did the Indian bowlers fare?
Bumrah was the pick of the Indian bowlers, claiming 4/50 in 11 overs. Akash Deep (2/19) and Ravindra Jadeja (2/19) trapped two batters apiece. Mohammed Siraj also took two wickets as he gave away 30 runs in 10.1 overs. Ace off-spinner Ashwin, who scored a century in the game, went wicket-less.
Bumrah completes 400 international wickets
Bumrah etched his name in the annals of Indian cricket history by becoming the sixth Indian fast bowler to claim 400 international wickets. The pace merchant joined Kapil Dev, Zaheer Khan, Javagal Srinath, Mohammed Shami, and Ishant Sharma. He has now raced to 401 wickets across 227 innings at 21.01. He overall became the 10th Indian bowler to get this feat.
Here are his Test numbers
Playing his 37th Test, Bumrah has raced to 163 wickets. As per ESPNcricinfo, Bumrah's current bowling average of 20.49 is the third-best among bowlers with 150 or more Test scalps. The Indian pacer owns 10 fifers in this format. This is his first Test against Bangladesh. The speedster has now completed 37 wickets across nine home Tests at 15.94. The tally includes two fifers.
Summary of India's second innings
India started poorly in their second outing. Both openers Yashasvi Jaiswal (10) and Rohit Sharma (5) departed cheaply. Pacers Nahid Rana and Taskin struck early. Shubman Gill and Virat Kohli (17) then added 39 runs before Mehidy trapped the latter. Gill (33*) and Rishabh Pant (12*) returned unbeaten as India finished at 81/3. Their overall lead is now 308 runs.
1,500 Test runs for Gill
Gill returned unbeaten on 33 off 64 balls, having smoked four boundaries. With his eighth run, the youngster completed 1,500 Test runs. Gill touched the 1,500-run mark in his 26th Test. He made his debut three years ago in the Boxing Day Test Down Under. While the Indian batter averages over 35 in the format, his tally includes four tons and six half-centuries.
