Real Madrid's Thibaut Courtois voted 2018's best goalkeeper by IFFHS
Thibaut Courtois might not have seen his Real Madrid career start off the way he'd want to, but his performances in 2018 are still earning him accolades. Courtois was awarded the Golden Gloves in the 2018 FIFA World Cup for his fabulous performance, and now the International Federation of Football History and Statistics (IFFHS) has voted him the best goalkeeper of 2018. Details on the voting and results
Experts from 90 different countries had taken part in the voting process. Courtois received 181 votes, and was followed by France's World Cup-winning captain Huge Lloris with 109 votes. Legendary Italian goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon was voted third with 59 votes. Courtois' teammate, three-time consecutive Champions League-winning goalkeeper Keylor Navas came fourth.
Luka Modric won the Best Game Maker award
Real Madrid midfielder Luka Modric picked up another accolade, this time winning the IFFHS Best Game Maker trophy. His performance with Real Madrid in the 2017-18 Champions League campaign and with Croatia in the 2018 FIFA World Cup brought Modric the recognition. Modric received 272 votes while Messi came second with 144 votes, and Eden Hazard came third with 114 votes.
A little on the IFFHS
The International Federation of Football History and Statistics was founded in 1984. The main objective of this institution was to chronicle detailed history and statistics related to football. IFFHS is based out of Bonn, in Germany, and ranks clubs across the world based on a merits system. They also annually honor the best clubs, national teams, players, and coaches for their performances.
