ICC World Cup Qualifiers: Afghanistan aim to create history
Afghanistan could join West Indies in the ICC 2019 World Cup main event, if they defeat Ireland on Friday in a virtual eliminator of Super Sixes. The winner between the two sides will not only get a ticket to England, but also play in the final of the Qualifiers against West Indies. Afghanistan are eyeing their maiden berth in a World Cup event.
Afghanistan: Journey in the World Cup Qualifiers
Afghanistan started World Cup qualifiers on a dismal note after losing their first three encounters. They beat Nepal and results from other games ensured a passage into the Super Sixes. Their three wickets win over West Indies was the turning point, as UAE were downed too. Earlier losses against Scotland and Zimbabwe saw them at four points from four games tied with Ireland.
Zimbabwe's stunning loss to UAE
Zimbabwe had a golden chance of making it to the main event. A win over UAE would have seen them qualify over Afghanistan and Ireland. But UAE had other ideas as they won the match by three runs in a last over thriller. UAE scored 235/7 in 50 overs before rain intervened. The revised target was 230 in 40 overs. The hosts managed 226/7.
When and where to watch the eliminator
The virtual eliminator tie between Afghanistan and Ireland starts at 1:00 PM IST. The match will be telecast live on Star Sports 2/HD. The match could also be streamed live on Hotstar.
Afghanistan go in as slightly better favourites
There is very little to separate the two sides, which have enjoyed almost a similar win ratio in their head-to-head ODI record. Rashid Khan and Asghar Stanikzai hold the key. Ireland look dependant heavily on their top order. Overall, Afghans have the edge.
