Jomel Warrican named ICC Player of the Month (January 2025)
What's the story
West Indies's left-arm spinner Jomel Warrican has been awarded the ICC Men's Player of the Month for January 2025.
The award comes after his brilliant performance in Pakistan, where he not only registered his career-best figures but also helped West Indies secure their first Test win in Pakistan in more than three decades.
"It's an honor to win this award," Warrican said.
Career milestone
Warrican's career-best figures and historic win
Warrican's brilliant show on Pakistan's spinning tracks was difficult for the hosts.
In the first Test against Pakistan in Multan, he registered his career-best bowling figures worth 10/101 and scored an unbeaten 31.
Although WI lost the match, thanks to Sajid Khan's brilliant 9/115, Warrican didn't lose hope and made a strong comeback in the 2nd Test at the same venue.
Match-winning performance
Significant contribution to West Indies's victory
In the 2nd Test, Warrican was the star with bat and ball. First, he scored a gritty 36 at number 11, taking West Indies from 95/9 to 163.
He picked four wickets in the first innings thereafter, giving his side a slight advantage.
His follow-up act in the final innings sealed the win for West Indies as his 5/27 ran through Pakistan's batting order, leading to a 120-run victory for the tourists.
Series stats
Warrican's overall performance and recognition
Across the series, Warrican scored 85 runs at an average of 42.50 (highest for West Indies) and picked 19 wickets at a phenomenal average of nine.
These numbers earned him the Player of the Series award.
This is the first time that Warrican has been honored with it, and only the third time for a West Indies player.
The previous two were Shamar Joseph and Gudakesh Motie in 2024.
