England post their third-highest total in ODI World Cups
England have posted a mammoth 364/9 against Bangladesh in Match 7 of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 in Dharamsala. The Bangla bowlers looked entirely clueless as England's top order was on a roll. While Joe Root and Jonny Bairstow scored fifties, Dawid Malan starred with a career-best 140. This was England's third-highest score in ODI World Cups. Here are further details.
A fiery start from the openers
Batting first in Dharamsala, England were off to a flying start as openers Bairstow and Malan attacked bowlers from the outset. Though the latter was more aggressive, Bairstow was not far behind in terms of contribution as he also found boundaries at regular intervals. The opening duo added 115 runs before Bairstow departed for 52 off 59 balls.
The 141-run stand between Root and Malan
Root arrived following Bairstow's departure and continued the onslaught. He joined forces with Malan as the duo added 141 runs for the second wicket in quick time. Malan, who reached his 100 off 91 balls, scored his final 40 runs off just 16 deliveries. Root, who also looked set to get a ton, also departed for 82 soon after.
100 ODIs for Bairstow
The game marked Bairstow's 100th appearance in ODIs. Bairstow has now raced to 3,738 ODI runs at 45.03. He has slammed 11 hundreds and 16 fifties. Moreover, his strike rate reads 103.57. 3,091 of Bairstow's runs have come in 74 ODIs as an opener. His average of 46.83 is the highest among England openers with at least 1,000 runs.
Career-best score for Dawid Malan
Malan played with remarkable intent as he scored runs all over the park. He ended up scoring a career-best 140 off 107 balls (16 fours, 5 sixes). In 23 ODIs, he has now raced to 1,200 runs at a sensational average of 63.16. As mentioned, this was Malan's sixth ton in ODIs. He also owns five fifties in the format.
Root scripts history
Root scripted history by becoming the first England batter to accomplish 900 runs in ICC Cricket World Cups. He ended up scoring a 68-ball 82 (8 fours, 1 six). He has now completed 917 runs in 19 WC games at 57.31. He also displaced Graham Gooch (897) as England's highest run-getter in WCs.
38th ODI fifty for Root
Root slammed his 38th half-century in ODI cricket and a second one in successive games. He smashed 77 off 86 balls in England's tournament opener against New Zealand. England's second-highest run-getter in ODIs, Root has now raced to 6,405 runs in 164 games at 49.26. His tally of 16 tons is the most for an England batter.
The bounce back in the last 10 overs
England touched the 300-run mark in just 40.2 overs and with seven wickets in hand, they looked set to touch the 400-run mark. However, Bangladesh bowlers made a remarkable fight back in the death overs and took wickets at regular intervals. The same dried up the run flow as the Brits could only manage 66 runs in their last 10 overs, losing six wickets.
Third-highest WC score for England
As mentioned, this was England's third-highest score in ODI WCs. Their top-two scores came in the preceding edition in 2019. While they posted 397/6 versus Afghanistan in Manchester, they mustered 386/6 against Bangladesh in Cardiff. Notably, a few days ago, South Africa posted the all-time highest team total in ODI WCs, 428/5 versus Sri Lanka in Delhi.
Career-best figures for Mahedi
Mahedi Hasan, who was expensive in his first spell, bowled brilliantly toward the death and claimed 4/71 in eight overs. This was his maiden four-fer in the format as the off-spinner has now raced to 12 wickets in nine games at a brilliant economy rate of 4.97. Notably, the off-spinner is standing in his ODI WC debut, having missed Bangladesh's opener against Afghanistan.
Three-fer for Shoriful
The 22-year-old Shoriful displayed his class in the last 10 overs and claimed 3/74 in 10 overs. The left-arm pacer has now raced to 40 wickets in just 24 ODIs at an economy rate of 5.49. He has displayed the ability to take wickets across all phases. Meanwhile, the youngster's best figures in the format reads 4/21.
